Dialogue to solve issues of social development, ICSD 2019 brings world experts

Jogjakarta, 15 July 2019 – The Department of Social Development and Welfare of FISIPOL UGM held the 21st Biennal International Conference Of International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD) titled “Strengthening Social Development to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. The conference brought 250 presenters from 28 countries and took place from 16 July to 19 July in Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Manohar Pawar as the president of ICSD, who hails from Charles Sturt University Australia, expressed his appreciation for FISIPOL’s hard work in bringing ICSD’s international dialogue.  ICSD, that have been going on since the 1970s, has the main goal of building social consciousness on sustainable development. “Even though ICSD have been held in almost 50 years, ICSD is still relevant because of the various social problems that also increase. The most important point from ICSD is looking at the potential of human resource,” said Manohar Pawar. read more

Fisipol UGM Student Becomes the Youngest Awardee of the Columbia Journalism School Student Fellowship for the N3Con 2019

Hong Kong, 7 June 2019—The New. Now. Next Media Conference (N3Con) 2019 was held by the Asian Chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association from the 30th of May until the 2nd of June 2019 in Hong Kong. This conference took place at the University of Hong Kong, Google Hong Kong and Bloomberg Hong Kong. This year’s N3Con was entitled “Covering Asia’s New Order”, which emphasized on the importance of Asia in the future of the media industry.

N3Con featured tens of guest speakers from various international media, such as Wenxin Fan (reporter at the Wall Street Journal), Eulaine Kurtenbach (the editor of the Associated Press), Motoko Rich (the Tokyo Bureau Chief of The New York Times), Shibani Mahtani (reporter at the Washington Post), Roger Clark (the Vice President of CNN International), Richard C. Paddock (reporter at the New York Times), Enda Curran (reporter at Bloomberg News) and many others. To support students worldwide, N3Con 2019 and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism established a fellowship program. Yunizar Adiputera: Advocating World Peace Without Nuclear Weapons

Yogyakarta, 10 May 2019–Several days ago, Indonesia was proud to serve as the President of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting. This meeting, which took place in New York, was led by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, and batik was the dress code of this meeting.

Next to the room where the UNSC meeting was taking place, another meeting was held to prepare a draft recommendation the 2020 Review Conference concerning the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Yunizar Adiputera, a lecturer from the Department of International Relations, was one of the representatives that participated in this conference that was held from the 29th of April until the 10th of May 2019. read more

The High Rate of Mortality and Sickness of the 2019 General Election Workers as an Extraordinary Occurrence

Yogyakarta, 8 May 2019–Fisipol UGM held a press conference to publish a research project regarding the high rate of mortality and sickness of the 2019 General Election workers. This research project is interdisciplinary, as it involves Fisipol UGM, the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing (FKKMK) UGM and the Faculty of Psychology UGM.

The press conference, which took place at Digilib Café, was attended by 21 media outlets. Erwan Agus Purwanto, the Dean of Fisipol UGM, stated that the high rate of death and sickness of the 2019 General Election workers can be classified as an extraordinary occurrence in order to prevent such phenomenon from occurring again in the future. read more

Fisipol UGM Inaugurates Soprema 2019

Yogyakarta, 2 Mei 2019–The Indonesian Young Sociopreneurs (Soprema) event was inaugurated once more this year. This event, which is organized by the Youth Studies Centre of Fisipol UGM (YouSure), has been held annually since 2016. The press conference event of Soprema was held on Thursday (2/5) at the second floor of the BB building.

Hempri Suyatna, the Director of Soprema, stated that this year’s edition reflects the strong commitment of Fisipol and YouSure to create new sociopreneurs. This year’s Soprema aims to have participants from 34 provinces, exceeding last year’s Soprema, which was attended by participants that hailed from 31 provinces. read more

CfDS Research Press Conference: The Rising Trend of Industry 4.0-Related Majors in Universities

Yogyakarta, 2 May 2019 – Several new industry 4.0-related majors were popular during the Joint Entrance Selection of State Universities (SBMPTN) 2018. Majors such as Digital Business and Actuarial Sciences were among them.

This finding is one of the research outputs of the Centre for Digital Society’s Digital Intelligence Lab. The readiness of universities and talks about higher education institutions were the main topics of this event.

“We predict that the growth of these new majors, which greatly correlates with the demands of the industry 4.0, will continue in the next few years,” as stated by Treviliana Eka Putri, the manager of the Digital Intelligence Lab. read more

Negative Tweets Drastically Increases After the 2019 General Election

Yogyakarta, 29 April 2019—The Research Centre for Politics and Government (Polgov) of the Department of Politics and Government UGM held another press conference on the 2019 General Election. The featured data were obtained through a cooperation between the Big Data Analytics Laboratory and TIFA Foundation.

Taking place in Digilib Café, this was the fifth press conference that focuses on the spread of negative issues through Twitter. The research, which took place from the 12th until the 22nd of April 2019, has managed to find 15,486 negative tweets that attacked both presidential candidates, as well as the General Elections Commission. read more

Two Fisipol UGM Students Partook in “The Empowerment of Women in Contemporary Indonesia: Progress and Challenges” Conference at UCLA as the Youngest Participants

“The Empowerment of Women in Contemporary Indonesia: Progress and Challenges” international conference was held under a cooperation between the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Indonesia Women Alliance (IWA). This conference was held on 8-9 February 2019, at the 314 Royce Hall, UCLA, and was attended by 16 presenters worldwide that presented their papers regarding gender issues in Indonesia. This conference highlighted the research surrounding socioeconomic changes, religion and politics that have advanced or inhibited women empowerment in Indonesia in the past decades. Minister Rudiantara Appreciates Fisipol UGM for Hosting a Digital Literacy Talk Show for Students

Becoming a part of digital society doesn’t necessarily mean simply becoming a consumer of the digitalization process. Critical and creative thinking skills are important in order to create a creative and resourceful digital society. With the dawn of industry 4.0, the society must adapt in order to meet the new demands in the digital era, according to Rudiantara, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology of Indonesia.

“Industry 4.0 is currently creating changes in various sectors in Indonesia, such as the workforce, trade, education, agriculture, financial services, transportation, culinary, health and fundraising activities. Everything is changing because of this digital revolution, and it’s expected to make everything more efficient for the public,” Rudiantara stated.

This digital revolution can be seen in the creation of several digital startups, such as Go-Jek, Kitabisa, Zenius and others. This industry can help the nation to increase economic productivity through the opening of new jobs. read more
