Mohammad Farid Budiono, a researcher from the Department of Social Development and Welfare at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, together with Prof. Susetiawan, has published a study examining state–community relations in rural electrification in Indonesia.

The study analyzes unequal contestations between the state and local communities in the implementation of rural electrification programs. Adopting a critical perspective, it shows that energy infrastructure development does not always align with community needs, but is often shaped by power relations, negotiation processes, and the marginalization of local voices.  read more

Prof. Suharko, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, has published a study examining the challenges of Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) transition. The work highlights tensions between industrial downstreaming strategies and emerging risks of delocalization within the broader energy transformation agenda. 

Adopting a sociological perspective, the study critically assesses EV policies framed as part of green development and industrial modernization. It argues that downstreaming—while aimed at increasing resource value—may generate new inequalities if local communities and workers across the supply chain are not adequately protected.  read more

Yogyakarta, October 27, 2025—The Academic Innovation unit of Fisipol UGM has initiated a new course titled “Forest Carbon Literacy 2025” on the FOCUS platform. The launching ceremony for the new course invited three speakers, as well as a module writer from the Forest Carbon Literacy 2025 course, that is Wahyu Yun Santoso (Lecturer at Fakultas of Law UGM), Budi Mulyana (Lecturer at Faculty of Forestry UGM), and Sarah Wibisono (Sustainability Consultant).

This year, the course is created with the intent to focus on the management of forest on the international level, emphasizing through cross-border comparison in understanding the best practices, as well as failures management of forests in other areas. In the making of this course, Fisipol UGM, through the Academic Innovation Unit, collaborated with UGM’s Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Law, Chakra Giri Energi Indonesia, and Oxfam.  read more

One of the lecturers from the Department of International Relations (DIHI), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) UGM, Suci Lestari Yuana, Ph.D., has once again achieved international academic recognition. Together with her collaborators, she has recently published a scholarly article in the prestigious journal Annual Review of Environment and Resources, titled “Transformative Innovation Policy: An Analytical Review of Key Methods and Challenges.”

The article discusses Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP), a new generation of innovation policy designed to address increasingly complex social and environmental challenges—from energy and food crises to mobility systems that remain entrenched in unsustainable modes of production and consumption. The authors emphasize that merely improving technologies or financial instruments is no longer sufficient. Systemic innovations and transformative policies are needed to enable just transitions, ensuring both social justice and planetary health. read more

The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, through the Institute of International Studies (IIS), in collaboration with the University of Essex, United Kingdom, is hosting the Networking Conference on Climate Geopolitics and Sustainable Mining Governance on Wednesday (3/9) at the FISIPOL Dean’s Meeting Room.

The two-day international conference, held on September 3–4, 2025, brings together around 12 academics and practitioners from various countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa. The participants engage in intensive discussions on sustainable mining governance amid the dynamics of global climate geopolitics. read more

Yogyakarta, 21st of March, 2025—UGM’s Faculty of Social and Political Science supports the government efforts at carrying out a nation-wide energy transition scheme towards clean energy. Through intense cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia and the British Embassy in Jakarta, the MENTARI Initiation was organized on Friday (21/3) at Fisipol UGM.

Indonesia has strengthened its commitment towards Zero Emission by updating its National Energy Policy. It is stated that in 2023, as much as 23 percent of the total primary energy supply comes from sustainable energy.In the year 2050, it is targeted to  be as high as 31 percent. Unfortunately, the progress towards  the development of clean energy for Indonesia’s primary energy supply is stagnant, stuck at somewhere around 12 percent. This urgency requires various parties to collaborate with each other and create breakthrough innovations, so that it can endorse the utilization of clean renewable energy that is both stable and capable to accommodate the energy needs of the people.

Nurhadi, S.Sos., M.Si., Ph.D.,  as Vice Dean of Finance, Asset, and Human Resources Affairs of Fisipol UGM, mentioned that climate change has become one of the research umbrella for the faculty that oversees various important agendas. “Everywhere we go we can feel clean rooms, or clean air. However, where does it all come from? As a country, our energy still relies on coal. Fulfilling clean energy becomes a challenge towards resource exploitation to be controlled,” Nurhadi mentioned.  read more

“Through the roadshow, we want to “kulanuwun”, greeting friends from various university in Indonesia and introducing the Ajisaka Festival as a collaborative space for creative folks in expressing their care and concern towards the issue that we have raised,” Adelia Christi mentioned in the interview, as the Leader of Ajisaka Festival .

The Ajisaka Roadshow started on the 20th of February at Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta and UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The roadshow program is planned to be organized frequently until the 24th of March. The roadshow agenda is done offline in campuses at Yogyakarta and Solo, while it will be done online at the other campuses. The roadshow consists of information sharing in regards to the competition categories, janamejaya video screening, and icebreaking activities. read more

This year, the Festival Ajisaka raises the issue of green economy with the title “Gaman Kamulyan: Echoing the Hope of Sustainability”.
