Yogyakarta, 17 September 2018- The arrival of the Minister of Education and Culture Prof.
Muhadjir Effendy was a part of his visit as the Chairman of the Indonesian Society for the
Development of Social Sciences (HIPIIS) for the Yogyakarta branch of HIPIIS (HIPIIS
DIY). HIPIIS DIY, in which most of its members are the Deans of faculties in the sphere of
social sciences in UGM, along with other members that hailed from other universities such as
UIN Sunan Kalijaga and UNS, welcomed the arrival of the Minister of Education and Culture
in the Digilib Café inside the Fisipol UGM building. The agenda of this meeting was filled
with discussions between members of HIPIIS DIY and the Minister of Education and Culture
regarding the programs of HIPIIS DIY.
The Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, who graduated with a master’s
degree in Public Administration in 1996 from Fisipol, after arriving at the location
immediately opened the discussion by discussing the current condition of social sciences in
Indonesia, especially regarding Pancasila as an ideology. According to him, the discussions
about Pancasila are too centred on the Epistemological (in regard to knowledge) and
Ontological (in regard to reality) dimensions, while neglecting the Axiological (on how a
knowledge can be implemented) dimension.
The Dean of Fisipol, Dr. Erwan Agus Purwanto, reported the developments in Fisipol,
particularly in terms of innovation. According to him, Fisipol possesses the Center for Digital
Society (CfDS) that established mediums where the values of Pancasila can be spread to the
millennial generation through mediums that are accepted in the mentioned generation, such
as Video Blog (Vlog). Furthermore, Fisipol also innovated in regard to employment by
having founded demoday, an event held by Fisipol Creative Hub (C-Hub), in which students
are not obliged to write a thesis if they succeed in creating social start-up businesses or often
known as sociopreneurs. The meeting was closed by an encouragement from the Minister of
Education and Culture to implement the plans that were brought by HIPIIS members during
the meeting. According to Pak Erwan, the outcome of the HIPIIS’ meeting and discussion at
that day was; first, how to develop a contextual and relevant method of teaching Pancasila;
and the second, in regard to how can Vocational education at the secondary (SMK) and at the
tertiary levels can be relevant to suit the demands in the workforce, and the agreement for the
creation of a future event similar to a workshop between the Vocational School in UGM and
other HIPIIS members.
