This discussion was joined by 20 participants and in general this discussion talked about the tips and tricks on how to build a startup that can make a great social impact for the society. To begin the discussion, the moderator talked about C-Hub Fisipol UGM as an ecosystem to learn about startup, digital world, and social entrepreneurship. In many occasions, C-Hub facilitates various activities from pitching for various people to develop their startups and creates social impacts.
Entering the sharing session, the Moderator shared the background of the pitching program at the Fisipol UGM. In her speech, she said that in terms of capacity, the current young generation has a fairly good adaptability. This can be found from various phenomena where young people often work in an environment that is not sufficiently in line with their field of study in college. Meanwhile, from the faculty background, the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UGM sees that there are many startups which are too profit-oriented, even though in fact, if you want to be sustainable, one of the things that needs to be seen is a matter of problem, and social problems are one of the things that are quite prominent. Therefore, Fisipol UGM took part in facilitating the development and innovation of social startups.
Regarding efforts to build a social startup, the most important part is to make efforts to exist so that it can have a social impact. In this case, the components that need to be fulfilled include having tools to catch problems, having a way to measure impact, and we need to have lots of friends and the ecosystem. However, startups also need to think about an economic model to generate capital outside of donations. Therefore, a transdisciplinary ecosystem is quite necessary, how do we engage and network with practitioners or stakeholders with problems in the hope of getting resources that can support the various activities we do.
“As long as the project you are doing can provide benefits to the community, and as long as you leave there the community loses you. So it is obligatory for you to continue to fight for it. That is what we must hold in Social Entrepreneurship,” Assat said as a closing of the discussion.
