The Communication Competition for High School Students, “Laksamana UGM”, is Being Held by the Department of Communication Studies of UGM

Yogyakarta, July 7th 2023─Laksamana UGM, which is a competition in the field of Communication Studies at the Indonesian high school level which was organized by the students of the Department of Communication Studies of UGM, is being held again this year. Ahead of its implementation, the Department of Communication Studies of UGM is holding a pre-event in the form of an online seminar entitled Commsultation: Unveiling The World of Communication Studies on Friday (7/7) online. The Commsultation itself was divided into two sessions, namely a big session with the main speaker and a breakout room session with speakers from the student representatives of the Department of Communication Studies of UGM.

Apart from aiming to provide information and knowledge about the Department of Communication Studies of UGM major to participants who are SMA/K/MA students throughout Indonesia, it is also to spark enthusiasm for participants to compete later.

Zainuddin Muda Z. Monggilo, S.I.Kom., M.A., a lecturer at the Department of Communication Studies of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada, who was present as the keynote speaker explained several topics of discussion, including the history of the establishment of the Department of Communication Studies of UGM, its character and curriculum, job opportunities, and Dikom UGM’s digital channel. As the 10th most favorite major in Indonesia and the 6th tightest study program at UGM in 2023, Zam also explained the pathway to enter the Department of Communication Studies of UGM. The presentation was carried out in stages starting from the most important entry route (SNBP) to the end (CBT UM-UGM).

Carrying out the tagline Crafting Well-informed Society, Dikom UGM places students in the position of having critical, creative and ethical thinking skills so that they have a strategic position when they graduate and return to society or the world of work later.

Zam also mentioned various kinds of jobs for Communication Studies graduates, including content creators, writers, public relations or public relations, advertising, and journalists, or reporters. However, job opportunities for Communication Studies graduates are not limited to working in the media sector. However, they can also work as researchers, academics, even ministers.

“There are many things that make studying at the Department of Communication Studies interesting, one of which is being able to study as a practitioner with well-known and competent public figures in their fields, for example, the recent celebrity Prilly Latuconsina. In addition, students can take part in various competitions and student activities that support the development of their potential,” said Zam. He also mentioned the names of alumni who are currently working in various fields.

After the session with the lecturers, the event continued with an FGD session. In this session, active students of the Department of Communication Studies of UGM shared their lecture experiences and discussed stereotypes of Communication Studies students with contest and webinar participants.

“Communication is comfunication and communiaction. We play on word cation. We become more empathetic, and know when to have fun and when to be serious. Communication Studies is broad, so it’s up to us to sort and choose it,” said Zam in closing.
