Improving English Literacy, CDC FISIPOL UGM Once Again Opens Essential Skills Batch V Program

Yogyakarta, 22nd of March 2025 — Once again, Fisipol UGM’s Career Development Center (CDC) opens the Essential Skills : Intensive Writing and Speaking Classes Batch V Program. This program is opened in collaboration with the University of Melbourne in attempting to accommodate the student needs for English language learning, which is identified as an essential skill by the faculty for study and career preparation. At the same time, this program is also aimed to train self-confidence through verbal and written communication in English.

In the fifth batch, this program will be open for 70 Fisipol UGM students who passed the selection phase. This program is designed for students with intermediate to upper intermediate skill in the English language, with TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or ACEPT results as proof. The implementation of the Essential Skills program will be effective at the end of April 2025, or after the midterm exam.  The registration phase of the program will open on 11th-23rd of March 2025 through the link attached here : http://ugm.id/EsentialSkillsCDC5. After registration, there will be the selection phase and the announcement will be done on the 24th of March 2025. As for the participants who got through the selection process, they will be fined a commitment fee as big as Rp 200.000,00 for undergraduate students, lecturers, and alumni of Fisipol UGM. As for postgraduate students, they will be fined Rp 300.000,00. The commitment fee will be paid back if the students’ attendance level is 75% or more.

The class will be guided by a language tutor from the University of Melbourne and another tutor from Fisipol UGM, done through both offline and online class schemes. The program will start with a material and discussion session guided by a tutor from Fisipol UGM, while the study group will be guided by a tutor from the University of Melbourne. Each group will consist of 10 people maximum. In each study group, the tutor and participants will discuss and agree upon the class schedule which accommodates all of the participants. From the schedule, there will be two material sessions, which includes argumentative writing and academic presentation focusing on four skill components: reading, listening, speaking, and writing,

“The essential skill program helps students in learning English and in improving their self-confidence of communicating with English, verbally or nonverbally.
