The Paradox of Food Security: GAMAPI UGM Holds Public Conference with Experts

Yogyakarta, 23rd May 2026—The Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Public Management and Policy Student Association (GAMAPI UGM) concluded its Public Action series of events by hosting a Public Conference to discuss food security with experts.

Food security has become a critical topic of discussion, particularly in light of its alignment with the national strategic program of President Prabowo Subianto. The complexities surrounding food security necessitate a thorough examination, especially when its implementation involves various actors and interests. The conference aimed to shed light on these complexities and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in achieving food security.

One of the key speakers, Mochtar Habibi, emphasized the importance of examining who is involved in the food security process and how it contributes to justice. “Food security focuses primarily on the availability of food. It does not matter where the food comes from, as long as it is available. This is different from food sovereignty, which not only considers availability but also who produces our food and how it is made. Currently, food sovereignty must focus on these aspects,” he asserted.

The discussions during the conference highlighted the need for a more inclusive approach to food security, one that considers the rights and roles of all stakeholders involved. Participants were encouraged to think critically about the implications of food production and distribution systems, particularly in relation to sustainable development goals (SDGs) such as access to education and efficient use of resources.

In addition to the discussions, the conference featured interactive sessions where attendees could engage with the experts and share their perspectives on food security. This format allowed for a rich exchange of ideas and fostered a collaborative atmosphere aimed at generating actionable solutions to the challenges presented.

The event also served as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of education in achieving sustainable food systems. By integrating education into the conversation, GAMAPI UGM underscored the role of informed citizens in advocating for policies that promote food justice and sustainability. Education for sustainability was a recurring theme, with many speakers highlighting the need for educational initiatives that empower individuals to make informed choices about food production and consumption.

As the conference concluded, participants expressed their commitment to taking further action in their communities to address food security issues. The hope is that the insights gained from the conference will inspire ongoing dialogue and collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector.

In summary, the Public Conference organized by GAMAPI UGM was a significant step towards addressing the paradox of food security in Indonesia. By bringing together experts and community members, the event fostered a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding food security and the importance of justice in food systems. The discussions held at Selasar Barat FISIPOL UGM will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing efforts to create a more equitable and sustainable food future.
