Yogyakarta, 9th of August 2024—The Department of Politics and Government of Fisipol UGM, through the Collaborative Hub for Politics and Policy on Sustainability (CoPPS), have organized the first Bulaksumur Roundtable Forum with the title of “Managing the Dilemma of Decentralization and Sustainability” on Friday (9/8) at UGM’s Balai Senat. This forum will feature academics, government officials, as well as business actors to dialogue on discussing both the issues of sustainability and evaluating the practices of local autonomies and local politics. Furthermore, this forum is also expected to be able to produce policy recommendations and strategic steps on promoting a new direction for further decentralization, which will have more emphasis on multi sector collaboration.

Yogyakarta, 7th of August 2024—The government of Indonesia is currently facing a dilemma regarding the issue of both the environment and the economy. Before, attempts made by the government to solve these problems often backfired and contradicted each other. On one hand, the government has committed to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which of course is one of the main causes of climate change. This move by the government is directly based on Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC). On the other hand, the Indonesian government is also committed to increase economic growth, so that it does not fall into the middle income trap.
Yogyakarta, August 7, 2024─The Department of Communication Sciences (DIKOM) Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a friendly event for new students entitled “New Student Friendly Event and Curriculum Presentation” on Wednesday (7/8). This event took place at Seminar Timur Room and marked the start of the Odd Semester lectures of the 2024/2025 Academic Year.
In addition to having the main objective of providing important information and understanding related to the curriculum that will be taken by new students, this event also functions as a forum for new students to interact and get to know lecturers, education staff, and fellow students. In addition, this interaction is very important in building a supportive academic environment, which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to quality education and education in the context of developing countries.
Yogyakarta, August 5th 2024─In an effort to dissect problems and find solutions regarding food security, the Department of Social Development Talks (SODET) organized the 67th Anniversary Special Edition of Social Development Talks. This special edition of SODET carries the theme “Discussion on Agriculture and Food: Realizing Food Security for a Prosperous Society”. The discussion was held offline at BRIWork Fisipol UGM on Monday (5/8) and was attended by various academics and agricultural practitioners.
Yogyakarta, August 1st 2024─PIONIR Society for learning, introduction, potential exploration, and orientation activities at the faculty level have been held from July 31 to August 1, 2024. By raising the main issue of freedom in public space, PIONIR Society 2024 aims to introduce the inclusive campus environment of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM. A talk entitled “Reconstruction of Public Spaces and Practices of Freedom of Expression in the Ruins of Democratic Values” became one of the series of PIONIR Society 2024. In the seminar session that presented Mohamad Hikari Ersada, an alumnus of the Department of Political Government who is currently serving as Program Director at the Public Virtue Research Institute, reviewed messages for young people who are critical and support basic human rights.
Yogyakarta, 30 July 2024–Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada (FISIPOL UGM) through the Center for Digital Society (CfDS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek) is again opening free classes for the general public. Titled the Digital Intelligence Course (Mata Kuliah Kecerdasan Digital/ MKKD), this online class can be taken by anyone and anywhere, without age restrictions and free of charge.
MKKD consists of two classes: Basic Digital Intelligence and Digital Research Methods. Each participant can choose one or two courses at a time. Lecturers will be held from 6 September to 12 November 2024 with adjusted topics.
Yogyakarta, July 31st 2024─Responding to the challenges of climate change and efforts to reduce plastic waste, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a movement of 1000 free tumblers for the academic community. This commitment begins with the symbolic handover of tumblers to new student representatives from six departments at FISIPOL UGM during the opening ceremony of PIONIR Society 2024 on Wednesday (31/7) in the West Hall of BB Building FISIPOL UGM.
Australia, 25th July 2024–Fisipol UGM collaborated with the Faculty of Arts, the University of Melbourne in the fourth conference in the Australia-Indonesia in Conversation (AIC) series which was held in a hybrid manner in the Yasuko Hiraoka room, Sidney Myer Asia Center, the University of Melbourne, Australia on Thursday (25/07). The conference is designed to analyze and foster bilateral partnerships and share knowledge, experiences, and insights through interactive panel discussions involving diplomats, academics, and policymakers. The second panel with the theme “New Governments in Indonesia and Australia: Domestic Challenges, Global Regime Change, and Geopolitical Tensions” discussed how Australia and Indonesia are trying to respond to the latest domestic and global developments.
Facing a New Government and the Middle Income Trap, Indonesia Strengthens Cooperation with Australia

A change in leadership at this moment will of course have significant impacts, not only on Indonesia’s domestic affairs, but also on its relations with other countries, including Australia. This topic became one of the main focus of discussion in the Fourth Conference of the Australia-Indonesia in Conversation (AIC), titled “The New Governments in Indonesia and Australia: Domestic Challenges, Global Regime Changes and Geopolitical Tensions.” This topic was discussed in particular at the First Discussion Panel titled “New Governments: Domestic Challenges and Bilateral Relations, which was held in hybrid mode at the Yasuko Hiraoka Room, Sidney Myer Asia Centre, at the University of Melbourne on Thursday (25/7).
Yogyakarta, July 24th 2024─The Department of International Relations Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada in collaboration with the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies UGM; Center for Southeast Asian Studies, National Chengchi University; Department of Educational and Futures Design, Tamkang University; held an insightful talk titled “Korea’s KASI (Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative) Strategy & Indonesia-South Korea Relations.” The event took place in a hybrid format attracting over 50 participants, including lecturers, staff, and students. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Gu Bo Kyung from Busan University of Foreign Studies, with Muhammad Rum, a lecturer from the Department of International Relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada, serving as the moderator.
