The Center for Digital Society (CfDS), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FISIPOL UGM), hosted the Information Resilience and Integrity Symposium (IRIS) 2025, an international academic and policy forum addressing the challenges of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
The event was held in collaboration with the Safer Internet Lab (SAIL)—an initiative by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Google Indonesia—together with CfDS FISIPOL UGM. IRIS 2025 provided a cross-sector dialogue space to respond to the impacts of GenAI on democracy, digital security, and social life across the Asia-Pacific region.
The symposium was opened by Prof. Wening Udasmoro, Vice-Rector of UGM, who emphasized the crucial role of academia in bridging research, policy, and public literacy on GenAI. Dr. Yose Rizal Damuri, Executive Director of CSIS, highlighted both opportunities and risks of GenAI, including digital fraud, foreign information manipulation, and threats to democratic integrity.
A keynote speech was delivered virtually by Meutya Viada Hafid, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi). She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to managing public enthusiasm for AI responsibly, stressing that: “Technology alone cannot build the future; it is humanity that builds it.”
The symposium also featured a public lecture by Prof. Ang Peng Hwa (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), who discussed the social risks of GenAI and the importance of cross-sector collaboration to strengthen information resilience. A strategic dialogue session brought together Wijaya Kusumawardhana (Expert Staff, Komdigi), Dr. Maria Monica Wihardja (ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute), moderated by Prof. Dr. Poppy Sulistyaning Winanti.
In addition to plenary sessions, IRIS 2025 presented four thematic panels on urgent issues: AI-driven financial fraud, digital surveillance and privacy, regional responses to foreign information manipulation, and the role of information in strengthening democracy.
Through IRIS 2025, FISIPOL UGM, via CfDS, reaffirms its commitment to actively studying the impacts of digital technologies, enhancing public literacy, and fostering international collaboration to build a more inclusive, safe, and trustworthy digital environment.
