Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM and Gaziantep University Launch Free Online Class

Yogyakarta, July 16, 2025─The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) of Gadjah Mada University (UGM), through the Academic Innovation Unit (UIA), is launching a free online class titled “Sustainable Transformation Towards Global Multifaceted Issues” on the FISIPOL Online Campus (FOCUS) website. This class is a product of a collaboration between FISIPOL UGM and Gaziantep University, and is supported by the Erasmus+ Project 2025.

Using English as the course language, this class aims to foster critical understanding in formulating inclusive and sustainable development strategies. addresses three main themes: industrial transformation in global production networks, sustainable food systems amidst multiple crises, and the green transition in Europe and its global implications. Participants will learn how global changes such as industrialization, climate and food crises, and environmental policies are reshaping urban spaces, local food security, and socio-economic policy directions. With case studies from Europe, Turkey, and Southeast Asia, the course fosters a critical understanding across diverse contexts and promotes academic collaboration in developing inclusive and sustainable development strategies. read more

[Call for Abstracts Invitation] – Go South 2025

We would like to invite you to the 2025 Annual Convention on the Global South, organized by the Institute of International Studies (IIS), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). This year’s convention will be held in person in Yogyakarta, on October 1st – 2nd, 2025. 

GO SOUTH 2025’s theme is “70 Years Bandung Spirit: Re-invigorating Decolonial Struggle amidst Geopolitical Turbulence.” It seeks to foster discussions and debates on the dynamics of the Global South, 70 years after the Bandung Conference. As material conditions of the Global South countries have changed and new global-regional powers have emerged, how can such a global emancipatory project be reinvigorated? How can imaginaries of the Bandung Spirit be expanded, to project ideas for a just and peaceful world order amidst current geopolitical turmoils? This forum provides platforms for academics, policymakers, and the general public to connect, collaborate, and interact with peers with regards to the above questions. read more

Indigenous Papuan Women: Forest Guardians Amid Structural Inequality

MEGASHIFT, a publication initiative by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) Universitas Gadjah Mada, has released its latest feature article highlighting urgent socio-political issues in Indonesia. Titled “Indigenous Women and the Politics of Periphery in Forest Conservation in Papua”, the article by Halimatu Sa’diah sheds light on the structural injustices faced by Indigenous Papuan women in their struggle to protect ancestral forests.

The article critically explores how Indigenous women—often positioned at the margins of state power—play a crucial role in forest conservation through their deep-rooted local knowledge. Through the lens of periphery politics, Sa’diah analyzes how centralized governance in Java, industrial expansion, and the inadequate legal protection for Indigenous communities have systematically marginalized women, both economically and socially. read more

UGM and NUS Examine Water Governance and Urban Settlements in Yogyakarta and Jakarta through the SFI 2025 Program

The Department of Public Policy and Management (DMKP), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with Residential College 4 (RC4) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), organized the Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SFI) 2025. This nine-day program, held from May 17–25, 2025, focused on issues of water governance, climate change, and community empowerment in Indonesian urban areas, particularly in Yogyakarta and Jakarta.

A total of 22 students from NUS, along with student facilitators from DMKP UGM, actively participated in the program. They were guided by faculty members from both institutions, including Dr. Erda Rindrasih, Dr. Ario Wicaksono, Dr. Dede Puji Setiono, and Dr. Navarun Varma from NUS. The program adopted participatory learning methods, such as field observations, stakeholder discussions, and research presentations. read more

Highlighting Climate Disinformation from the Global South: Dr. Novi Kurnia Delivers Keynote Address at The 9th Climate Energy Summit in Seoul

Seoul, June 26, 2025 — As the urgency of the climate crisis continues to intensify, the global community faces a growing obstacle: the spread of misinformation and disinformation that hampers public understanding and concrete climate action. At the prestigious 9th Climate Energy Summit held in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Novi Kurnia, a lecturer in the Department of Communication Science at FISIPOL UGM and lead researcher at the Centre for Digital Society (CfDS) UGM, delivered a keynote address offering a critical perspective from the Global South on the rampant spread of climate-related falsehoods. read more

Building Camaraderie through FISIPIT Group Cycling

Amid a busy campus schedule, FISIPIT once again fostered a warm and friendly atmosphere through its Gowes Bareng (Group Cycling) event held on Saturday, June 28, 2025. This regularly organized activity is not only a casual sports gathering but also strengthens relationships among the FISIPOL UGM academic community, including lecturers, administrative staff, students, and retirees.

Embodying the spirit of togetherness and a healthy lifestyle, the cycling group set off from the PPKK FISIPOL UGM courtyard at 6:00 a.m., heading to the residence of one of the staff members. Participants, wearing their distinctive FISIPIT jerseys, enthusiastically enjoyed the route while chatting and sharing stories during the ride. read more

BRF The Clinics Explore Opportunities and Strategies for Climate Finance Based on Public Participation

Yogyakarta, June 19th 2025 – Bulaksumur Roundtable Forum (BRF) was held again through The Clinics series which this year focused on the theme “Opportunities for Zakat, Infaq, Sadaqah, and Waqf (ZISWAF) to Build Participative Climate Finance in Indonesia”. Located at the 4th Floor Auditorium of FISIPOL UGM, this forum became a forum for cross-sector discussions to explore the potential of social funds as an instrument of inclusive and sustainable climate crisis financing. The forum presented a variety of speakers from philanthropic institutions, Islamic finance, to government agencies. Some of them were Syamsul Ardiansyah (Senior Officer of Strategic Alliance Dompet Dhuafa), Dede Haris Sumarno (Commissioner of Supervision and Governance of the Indonesian Waqf Board), and Nur Fadilah (ESG Operation and Communication Head of Bank Syariah Indonesia). In addition, the forum also involved academics and climate policy experts to enrich perspectives. read more

More than Sustainable, the C-Hub Talent Pitching Webinar Opening Pushes the Regenerative Entrepreneur Spirit

In the webinar titled “Future-Driven Entrepreneurship for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, Fisipol UGM’s Creative Hub presented two inspirational speakers, none other than Satya Dewastra B. Increase Environmental Awareness, GAMAPI FISIPOL UGM Holds Environmental Action (Aksi Lingkungan/ Angklung) at Pandansari Beach

Yogyakarta, 18 May 2025–GAMAPI FISIPOL UGM held an Environmental Action (Aksi Lingkungan/ Angklung) work program at Pandansari Beach, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta. This activity was designed by the Social Society division (Sosmas) of GAMAPI as a means of realizing positive contributions and responsibilities towards the environment. 

“As students, we want to invite and provide a forum for other students and non-students to have a real impact on the environment as an effort to care for and increase awareness of our shared environment,” said Farrel.  read more
