Yogyakarta, January 14, 2026—The Department of International Relations (DIHI), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu), held an event titled “Watching Together the 2026 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM)” on Wednesday (January 14) at the Independent Auditorium of Fisipol UGM. DIHI UGM was one of nine partner universities selected to host the joint viewing of the 2026 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM). The event took place in the Nusantara Room of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was broadcast live on the MoFA Indonesia YouTube channel.

Following the viewing session, the event continued with a discussion on foreign policy. This discussion provided a space for reflection on the achievements and direction of foreign policy, specifically addressed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono. The session, attended by 130 participants, featured Khasan Ashari (Head of the Center for Education and Training, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) as a resource person, Prof. Mohtar Mas’oed and Prof. Siti Muti’ah Setiawati (Professors of International Relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada) as commentators, and Drs. Muhadi Sugiono (Lecturer in International Relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada) as moderator.
Prof. Mohtar Mas’oed highlighted the anarchic global context and emphasized the importance of understanding the dynamics of power transitions. In his reflection, he also questioned the current reliance on multilateralism, while encouraging a minilateralist approach to address more specific issues. Prof. Mohtar also touched on potential threats to Indonesia, such as territorial sovereignty, strategic economic and industrial interests, and digital governance.

Meanwhile, Prof. Siti Muti’ah Setiawati criticized the frequent inconsistency of foreign policy implementation with its stated principles. “For example, Prabowo’s statement regarding recognizing Israel if Israel recognizes Palestine. This inconsistency makes the direction of Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy unclear,” she said. He also highlighted Foreign Minister Sugiono’s press statement, which failed to clarify or clarify the inconsistencies. He also assessed that Foreign Minister Sugiono offered nothing new in the 2026 PPTM; its contents were more or less a continuation of previous policies.
