Yogyakarta, 8 May 2019–Fisipol UGM held a press conference to publish a research project regarding the high rate of mortality and sickness of the 2019 General Election workers. This research project is interdisciplinary, as it involves Fisipol UGM, the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing (FKKMK) UGM and the Faculty of Psychology UGM.
The press conference, which took place at Digilib Café, was attended by 21 media outlets. Erwan Agus Purwanto, the Dean of Fisipol UGM, stated that the high rate of death and sickness of the 2019 General Election workers can be classified as an extraordinary occurrence in order to prevent such phenomenon from occurring again in the future.
Erwan’s statement was supported by Ova Emilia, the Dean of FKKMK UGM. She conveyed that her faculty is willing to support this research. Physical autopsies, verbal autopsies and interviews to the sick 2019 General Election workers are some of the methods that can be done to conduct this research.
“Furthermore, the rate of mortality in this year’s general election is far higher compared to the previous year, and this is the basis of classifying this phenomenon as an extraordinary occurrence,” as stated by Riris Andono Ahmad, another representative from FKKMK UGM. Faturochman, the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology UGM, also agreed that this phenomenon should be classified as an extraordinary occurrence. He stated that his faculty will emphasize on studying the workload of the 2019 General Election workers.
“The amount of workload that has been allocated to the 2019 General Election workers is an important aspect that needs to be studied further in this research,” he conveyed. In addition, Faturochman also stressed the importance of the welfare of the 2019 General Election workers. “The question is, has the governed paid enough attention to the welfare of the 2019 General Election workers?”
Moreover, the researchers hoped that this research will also involve other disciplines from other universities throughout Indonesia, particularly from the regions with a high amount of mortality and sickness of the 2019 General Election workers.
