How many study programs in FISIPOL?

FISIPOL UGM has six departments. Most of the departments have their own Bachelor degree, Master degree, and Doctoral degree study programs. The departments that have the Bachelor degree, Master degree, and Doctoral degree study programs are Departments of Politics and Government, Department of Sociology, Department of Communication Science, and Department of Public Policy Management that each of them has two study programs of Master degree and Doctoral degree. The departments that have Bachelor degree and Master degree are the Department of International Relations and the Department of Social Development and Welfare. Especially for the Bachelor degree students, the new student entrance test not only for the regular class, but there is also International Undergraduate Program class (IUP) for three study programs: International Relations, Public Policy Management, and Communication Science. Therefore, at least there are eight possible ways to be the FISIPOL students. Through regular way and IUP.

What is the difference between Public Policy Management and Social Development and Welfare? Because they seemed related.

In the Public Policy and Management we learn about how the policies in a country are made, including the state budget, analyzing the policy formation until the implementation, and the most important is about how the bureaucracy works. Social Development and Welfare examines and concerns more about the development in the society, the process of community empowerment, and managing the marginal groups. Moreover, what systems that needed so that the welfare is distributed evenly, there are the role of the state, society, and private sectors in promoting welfare. Indeed, they are always related one to another, not only Public Policy Management and Social Development and Welfare, but also the other study programs.

Do you have to speak in English to be the International Relations students?

The ability to speak in English is not for the International Relations students only, it is for all of the study programs. Because English is used universally and the world is changing, therefore it is important to have a basic knowledge about that. For the regular class, English test is not the main point, but for the IUP it will be an English test. On average, the freshmen of the IUP of International Relations have an IELTS score of 7-8, the average of Public Policy Management scored 6.5-7, and the Communication Science scored around 7.

Why did many of the alumni of FISIPOL become the Ministers?

There were also many who became ministers from other faculties. Indeed, in FISIPOL we learn about academics and non-academics. Such as leadership characters, organizational skills, negotiating, and deliver our opinion systematically. There are many other things that we learn besides the theories. From those different skills, not only the alumni of FISIPOL, but the others also could have non-academic skills to support their careers.

What are the general employment prospects of FISIPOL?

FISIPOL is a faculty that founded with the aim of providing the bureaucrats at the beginning of this republic. Until 1980’s, 80 percent of the alumni of FISIPOL worked in bureaucracy field. Then, in the 90’s there came a shift, they were in the bureaucracy, non-government organization, medias, even in the private sectors. In the 2000’s, that worked in the bureaucracy became less and less. Even from our tracer, in the last three to four years, the alumni of FISIPOL that worked in bureaucracy was around 20 percent. Many of the alumni worked in Multinational Corporation, in the company as a government relation, as an academics, and also many of them worked in NGO. Not only as the workers in NGO, many of them also founded a NGO.

How about the FISIPOL students from 3T area?

There were efforts from the university to reach as many qualified prospective students as possible from the 3T area and FISIPOL became the part of it. Last year, there were six to seven students from Papua, many enough. The possibilities for the others are also open because we combined two things: free competition where the best ones could pass, and the national responsibility of UGM. If I were often mentioned about the Bachelor degree, in Master degree the students profiles are more diverse. From their universities background to their origins. It needs to be seen comprehensively that UGM opens the opportunities for all nations.

For more efforts, FISIPOL, especially for the Doctoral degree, offering a FISIPOL Full Ph.D. scholarship. This program was the Doctoral degree full scholarship that provided by FISIPOL for the young lecturers non-UGM from Indonesia. This program began this year and there were seven slots available. This scholarship will cover tuition fees and living expenses of 4 million a month. But, the requirement is to become a full time students. There was also an IUP Scholarship that offered to the ASEAN citizens. This year, there were six slots of scholarship for the high school alumni in ASEAN.
