JMF Skill Class: The Importance of Having a To Do List

Yogyakarta, April 22th 2020—Islamic Jamaah of Fisipol (JMF) held a skill class on Wednesday, April 22nd 2020. The theme of the class was Bullet Journaling Class with “Organized to do list and real productivity” as the title. In this session, JMF had Labiqatul Fatiyasani who is the owner of @bikin_diary as the speaker. This class started at 20.30 through the Whatsapp Group platform. It had up to 257 people as the member from various places. This discussion was moderated by Latifatul Zahiroh.

Before beginning the discussion, the speaker asked the members of the group about their hope when joining this class. Then, to start the discussion, the speaker first talked about the history of Bullet Journal. Bullet Journal is a system to create schedules as a reminder, to write down to do list, to write down list of events that we have to go to, and to organize various tasks in one book. The aim of the journal is to evaluate events that have passed, organize events we have now, and to plan for events in the future.

Creating a to do list system is not without purpose. There are several reasons why having a system to organize our time is important. “The first reason is because we have limited time; the second reason is because time needs to be evaluated; the third reason is just because we think we are busy, does not mean that we are productive.” Said Labiqatul.

After telling those reasons, the speaker explained how to organize our time wisely. The tips are to have a to do list, to set deadlines, to create a schedule routinely, to have a good habit, to prepare the night before, to not say yes too easily, to have a break to refresh, and to be flexible. The speaker then quoted Ryder Carrol’s thought system in the Bullet Journal book which is “Need to do, should do, and want to do”. Those three things uncover which events or tasks are urgent or not.

As we all know, to do list can be divided to yearly, monthly, and daily to do list. Here, the speaker elaborated how to create to do lists that are organized and creative with a picture example. According to her, in order to create a daily to do list, we have to have a daily schedule. First, we have to divide our schedule to two categories: weekdays and weekends. Then, each category should be divided in 24 hours according to when we are active and when we need our break. “It is imperative that we have a yearly, monthly, and daily to do list.”

The interactive discussion was then followed by a question and answer session. Every member was very active and enthusiastic in asking questions and giving responses. The discussion was so active that it went on until 11 pm. To close the discussion, Labiqatul quoted Ibnul Qayyim “If you are not occupied with goodness, then you must be occupied with malice.”
