Immersion Program

BACKGROUND

Indonesia has been experiencing transitional process of democracy since the Independence Day is declared. In the early years of the independence, Indonesia critically faced the wide obstacles in the state and nation building projects. The revolution period has change the system from presidential into parliamentarian in which finally leads the President taking control over the parliament itself. This period was initially marked the first authoritarianism in Indonesian political history.

While the world politics was in tension because of Cold War, the New Order era which mostly dominated by the military has ended the previous regime by bloody revolution. The regime then brought hopes about economic growth and democracy in Indonesia. However, after more than three decades, the regime put Indonesia into political catastrophe because of authoritarianism. The fall of New Order was also stimulated by the world’s economic crises that undoubtedly changed the political structure for some nations.

In the last decade, the process of democratization in Indonesia is still evolving. The adoption of multi-party system, decentralization, economic liberalization and so forth are certainly inseparable parts of contemporary Indonesian politics. At societal level, political transformation has influenced the civil society which nowadays gives significant role to define Indonesia’s politics. Furthermore, international issues such as terrorism, economic crisis as well as globalization are also significant component to draw Indonesia’s future. Consequently, it would be essential to comprehend the Indonesian democracy by critically investigating such dynamics.
