Yogyakarta, April 29th 2021━The online Cup of Tea Discussion on Zoom Meeting came back with the third edition of discussion on Thursday (29/4). The Cup of Tea discussion of Talking and Thinking about International Relations was held by the Institute of International Studies of FISIPOL UGM. This discussion presented Suci Lestari Yuana, the lecturer of International Relations of UGM as the speaker. The Cup of Tea #3: Critical Moment and Dramaturgy Analysis as the Alternatives in Assessing the Social and Political Conflicts tried to discuss more deeply about the article that has been written by Nana. In her article entitled ‘A Dramaturgy of Critical Moments in Transition: Understanding the Dynamics of Conflict in Socio-Political Change’, Nana and her team examine the complexity and multidimensional nature of conflicts related to transformative change using the concepts of critical moments and dramaturgy.
According to Nana, the concepts of critical moments and dramaturgy can be the tools to deepen the analysis of the space and time of conflict, so that conflicts become more “visible”. On this occasion, Nana used a non-binary approach and point of view to study open conflict━usually called as a battleground. Nana herself focused more on her presentation on critical moments that appear in the transition period of conflict, a time when a discourse experiences dislocation and has the possibility to shift from the discourse itself. This critical moment was analyzed by Nana with a discourse and dramaturgy point of view. To provide a more real and concrete explanation, Nana used a conflict case study between online taxi service providers as an exploration material.
Completing the discussion regarding the findings, Nana ended her presentation with several reflections related to conflict analysis. One reflection of the findings showed that critical moments and dramaturgy analysis can be an alternative for analyzing a conflict. With the concept of critical moments, the complexity and multidimensionality of the conflicts that occur can be more visible. Likewise, the dramaturgy point of view is able to provide a material perspective on the conflict. Guided by Handono Ega P., the Publication Staff of IIS of IR UGM, as the moderator, the participants had the opportunity to respond and give direct questions to Nana after the presentation session of the material. The discussion officially ended after closing and a group photo.
