Yogyakarta, September 28th 2021─Organization of Humanity or OH FISIPOL UGM held a live Instagram broadcast to discuss the topic “Digital Society and How It Shapes Beauty Standard” with Ivony Carmelita Putri from the Girl Squad 2020. In a live Instagram broadcast hosted by Gilang Irfan Anshori, student of the Department of Social Welfare and Development class of 2021, Vony shared a lot about her views on beauty standards and their relation to the current development of digital technology.
In Vony’s view, the definition of beauty is a situation when individuals can be confident to express themselves. That way, the individual will not be afraid of the “limits” that they have, and will be able to explore themselves as widely as possible. “Don’t want to be dictated by the size of beauty made by others,” Vony said, quoting Najwa Shihab.
Vony realizes that the standard of beauty that is often attached to women has been instilled since childhood, until finally carried over to adulthood. In fact, Vony sees that it is herself who should determine the standard of beauty for an individual. Because, if the individual continues to follow the beauty standards of others, they will actually feel insecure and consumed by negative thought patterns.
This also applies to beauty standards that are often created by netizens, in the current digital era. Vony believes that every citizen must have different tastes. So, the beauty standards of netizens will definitely be endless. Moreover, many netizens only judge from the “screen”, and if you follow the beauty standards that netizens make, individuals will not be able to be themselves. However, Vony also sees the possibility of netizens providing constructive suggestions in good language. And if the suggestion can indeed make the individual better, there is nothing wrong with accepting it.
The discussion in this Instagram live broadcast took the form of a two-way chat between Gilang and Vony. Gilang also reads out questions from the live broadcast audience, so that Vony can answer them. In conveying his views, Vony also provides many examples based on her personal experience. Closing the live broadcast session, Gilang concluded that there are two important points regarding self-beauty, namely loving and “finding” oneself.
