The event was held online with the title of “Behind the Scenes of Working in the Government Inner Circle”. On this occasion, the event was attended by 101 people with Devy Dhian Cahyati, a lecturer in DPP Fisipol UGM, as the moderator. The topics covered in the event were the experience of the speaker in the government, the dynamics of working in the government, and the lessons learned.

More about the speaker, AAGN Ari Dwipayana is the Presidential Special Staff as well as a lecturer in DPP Fisipol UGM. He started working in the government in 2016 and he noticed that there is a shift of ecosystem in academic discourse towards a practical and wide area. Although there is a shift in the ecosystem, the knowledge gained in an academic world is a quite useful foundation to do our tasks.

As a worker in the government sphere, the development of democracy is quite a complex obstacle. The society is developing and with that their expectation in public service. Freedom of expression, information dissemination, and power sources pushes the government to work with a helicopter view. The issue contested also varies, starting from politics, social economy, and culture. The government also needs to pay close attention to each and every one of the topics. That is why the government’s capacity also needs to vary.

Even though working in the government demands an array of skills from an individual, the speaker spoke from his own experience that the knowledge gained from university is important in his job. Several points referred by the speakers are how to think comprehensively and based on concrete data. Other than that, a knowledge on how power works is also needed. Those things are covered in the department of governmental politics, so being an academic does not mean that we need to get far away from the center of power because in reality, academics are also needed in governmental roles in order to create welfare for the greater good.
