Observing the Urgency and Dynamics of Communication in the Value of Nationalism and Human Rights with the NGOPI “Doctoral Sharing” Series

Yogyakarta, November 5th 2021─After previously successfully holding the first edition of the NGOPI “Doctoral Sharing” Series last August to discuss communication issues in the realm of local government and infrastructure, the Program of Doctoral Study of the Department of Communication Sciences of  FISIPOL UGM held its second edition on Friday (5/10). By raising the title “Urgency and Dynamics of Communication in Development: The Value of Nationalism and Human Right”. In this second edition of the NGOPI “Doctoral Sharing” Series, the speakers and discussants seek to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of communication science that can enter into various aspects of life and fields of studies.

Dewi Kartika Sari, Doctoral Student of the Department of Communication Sciences, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UGM, as the first speaker, brought the topic “Reading the Meaning of Generation Z Nationalism in Indonesian Digital Media” for her presentation session. In the discussion presented, Dewi gave several examples of cases of nationalism discourse in online media in the past few years until 2021. As a closing as well as emphasizing the material she presented, Dewi conveyed the urgency of nationalism discourse, especially in online media by showing data on the use of online media in Indonesia.

In contrast to Dewi, Senja Yustitia, the second speaker who is also a Doctoral Student of the Department of Communication Sciences, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UGM, gave a more general perspective by raising the title “Guessing the Role of Media in Human Rights Issues” in the material she presented. Senja started her presentation by discussing the urgency of the role of the media for the advancement of human rights, which was strengthened by a landscape map of human rights issues that required the role of the media. Senja presented the material in the form of a chart to show the relationship and cause and effect in media relations with human rights issues.

The presentations of the two speakers were further deepened with responses from the two discussants who are the lecturers of the Department of Communication Sciences, namely Dr. Novi Kurnia and Prof. Nunung Prajarto, Ph.D. The participants of the second edition of the NGOPI “Doctoral Sharing” Series also had the opportunity to have direct discussions with the speakers and discussants in a question and answer session led by Dr. Rahayu, a lecturer of Communication Studies, as moderator. All discussions that were built in the second edition of the NGOPI “Doctoral Sharing” Series were then closed by closing messages which were delivered alternately with the reverse order of the material presentation sessions: starting with the discussants, followed by the speakers. Rahayu also conveyed the conclusion as the official closing of the entire second edition of the NGOPI “Doctoral Sharing” Series event.
