Yogyakarta, November 9th 2021─The Faculty of Social and Political Science (Fisipol), Gadjah Mada University (UGM) held a Professor Inauguration Speech event by Prof. Dr.phil Hermin Indah Wahyuni, M.Si. from the Department of Communication studies. The event was held offline for a small number of guests and also online. In the event that lasted from 10.00 to 11.00 WIB, Professor Hermin gave a speech titled “Autopoiesis Communication as the Energy for Social System Adaptation: Response, Resonance, (R)evolution”.
“Through this title, I would like to invite the audience to delve into the current condition that shows the gigantic and complex problem of communication in modern society which shows a society marked by distinct characteristics with a horizontal structure and an intense relation facilitated by communication information technology,” Prof. Hermin said. She then elaborated the autopoiesis communication system that is based on the Autopoiesis System Theory by the German sociologist, Niklas Luhmann. Prof Hermin said that the autopoiesis communication system is a communication system oriented from its own elements, based on its own needs, and that develops a system to respond to its own problem.
The Head of the Communication Studies Department, Rajiyem, said that Prof. Hermin has officially got the title of Professor since 2019. With that, the total of professors in the Communication Studies Department is now two. According to Rajiyem, the title that Prof. Hermin has gotten can increase the reputation and academic wisdom of the department as an institution and it can strengthen the UGM Communication Studies post-masters program. The achievement can also be an inspiration for other colleagues in the department. “This is an astounding achievement, Prof Hermin is the second woman professor in Fisipol after Prof. Partini,” Rajiyem added. Right now, Prof. Hermin is the only women professor in Fisipol.
“Prof. Hermin Indah Wahyuni is now a part of the 350 active professors in Gadjah Mada University,” UGM’s rector, Prof. Panut Mulyono said in UGM’s Senate Hall. The rector added that Prof. Hermin is also a part of the 16 professors in Fisipol UGM. So far, Fisipol UGM has 33 professors. The inauguration speech by Prof Hermin was given in UGM’s Senate hall and was seen by thirty attendees. Around forty staff and lecturers in the communications department saw the event online in the Fisipol Auditorium. Additionally, more than 300 attendees watched the event virtually through a Zoom Meeting channel facilitated by Fisipol UGM.
