UGM Update Serial: New International Undergraduate Program Students Admissions

Yogyakarta, February 4th 2022─Universitas Gadjah Mada held another UGM Update series with a topic related to “International Undergraduate Program New Student Admission”. In this second episode, there were five study programs which became the topic of further discussion regarding the IUP program, namely two study programs from the scientific cluster consisting of Pharmacy and Chemistry, and the next three study programs from the social humaniora cluster which are International Relations, Communication Studies, and Public Policy Management. “The International Relations IUP program has been established since 2011 with several offers of concentration, ranging from issues of Global Politics Security, International Political and Economic Development, and Peace and Conflict Studies. We initiate some of these concentrations through collaboration with several foreign universities that are partners, while still considering the International Relations curriculum of UGM,” said Treviliana Eka Putri as Secretary of the International Relations Study Program.

“Unlike International Relations, the IUP Communication Science Program was only established in 2019 with two concentrations offered, namely Media and Communication Specialist and Mediapreneur. Even though it is still relatively new, the track record of registration for the first batch for each intake opening can reach 150 registrants,” Dr. Ardianindro, the representative of the Communication Science study program, continued.

The discussion of the new IUP students also touched on the issue of international exposure, which is one of the flagship programs offered by each study program. Broadly speaking, there are various kinds of international exposure which are also facilitated by each study program. Starting from double degree programs, student exchange, to study abroad. In which of the several programs, each study program will apply a selection mechanism that will be adjusted to the cooperation procedure that has been signed with partner universities.

“The IUP Public Policy Management Program gives students the opportunity to choose three destination countries and then are required to follow the selection process. Several universities are often chosen, including Birmingham University, Leeds University, and Leiden University. In the last semester during this pandemic period, Norway and the Netherlands became the representatives of the countries that were chosen by many students,” said Nurul Dwi Purwanti representing the Public Policy Management study program.

English as the language of instruction for classes and academic funding is also something that distinguishes the IUP program class from the regular study program class that prospective students must know. In addition, prospective students of the IUP program are expected to participate in preparing themselves to face a series of selection processes which include the TOEFL, AcEPT, GMST Test which will be held by Universitas Gadjah Mada and several other selection tests that will be carried out independently from the department in charge of the IUP program study to be selected by the applicant.

“Prospective students are expected to be able to follow the development of contemporary issues related to the chosen study program. We also see how the preparation and authentic characteristics will be different from each registrant’s potential,” Treviliana Eka Putri said.
