Beware of Sexual Violence in the Campus Environment, FISIPOL Crisis Center Prepares Four Services

Yogyakarta, 13 July 2024–To prevent and deal with cases of sexual violence in the campus environment, the FISIPOL Crisis Center provides four services ranging from reporting to educational facilitators. The FISIPOL Crisis Center or FCC is a work unit under the Career Development Center (CDC) tasked with carrying out, coordinating, and/or monitoring efforts to prevent and recover cases of sexual violence on the FISIPOL UGM campus.

According to Arie Eka from the FCC Reporting and Services Division, four integrated services include case reporting, psychological assistance and recovery, legal counseling, and educational facilitators. This service is open to all FISIPOL academics as a manifestation of the 5th point of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Gender Equality because it seeks to eliminate discrimination in all forms of sexual violence.

First, reporting cases of sexual violence can be done through three channels, namely direct reporting, referrals/ reports from study programs or other institutions, reaching out to victims, or offering FCC assistance if news of an act of sexual violence is found.

Second, psychological assistance and recovery begin with an assessment by a counselor and then documentation and verification of the case.

“After the report comes in, depending on the survivor’s comfort, they want to be with FCC staff or an FCC psychologist who will assess the survivor’s condition first,” explained Eka in an interview.

If the condition is an emergency, the survivor’s report is referred to emergency treatment to receive medical treatment from a hospital or counseling with a psychologist.

Third, legal counseling as a form of handling and resolving cases of sexual violence. There are two resolution paths namely legal (judicial) resolution by statutory regulations and ethical resolution through a special investigation team.

The formation of a special investigation team tasked with providing sanctions during decision deliberations is an effort to achieve the 16th point of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by opening access to human rights for all survivors of sexual violence.

Lastly, services as a facilitator of sexual violence education. FCC opens collaboration with external parties who intend to support the FISIPOL UGM initiative to become a peaceful campus free from sexual violence.

The mechanism for preventing cases of sexual violence is carried out through transformation in four areas consisting of teaching and student affairs, service research and collaboration, campus infrastructure and layout, and institutional governance.

If you want to report a case of sexual violence, you can come directly to the FISIPOL Crisis Center Office, call the hotline number (081227912402), or fill out the form ugm.id/FormulirPengaduanFCC.
