International Relations Department Welcomes New Students through Rumah HI

Yogyakarta, August 16, 2024─On August 16, 2024, the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (DIHI FISIPOL UGM) held an event titled “Rumah HI” to welcome new students of the 2024 batch. This event took place in the East Seminar Room of FISIPOL UGM. It aimed to provide important information and equip new students with various topics, including curriculum, anti-plagiarism, communication ethics, anti-sexual violence, and mental health.

The Rumah HI agenda was divided into six sessions designed to discuss a specific theme relevant to the student’s academic journey. The first session was hosted by Dr. Randy Wirasta Nandyatama and Arinda Nityasari, Head and Secretary of the Undergraduate Study Program, who explained the curriculum and guidelines for Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM). This initiative is essential to develop basic literacy skills among students, ensuring they are prepared for their studies in higher education.

The second session discussed anti-plagiarism, presented by a final-year student from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Malaysia. The session emphasized the importance of maintaining academic integrity in academic writing and provided practical tips on how to avoid plagiarism. Such discussions are crucial in promoting a culture of honesty and responsibility in academic work, in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) point 4 on quality education.

In the third session, Yulida Nuraini Santoso, M.Sc., a lecturer in the Department of International Relations, raised the topic of communication ethics. She presented examples of messages to lecturers and invited students to review messages that were considered appropriate or inappropriate. This interactive discussion helped participants understand the nuances of communicating with faculty and staff, considering factors such as language and time of delivery.

Then, in the next session, students were divided into groups to meet with Academic Advisors (DPA). This fourth session facilitated introductions between students and DPA, allowing students to convey their expectations and concerns regarding their studies at HI UGM. Such interactions are essential to building a supportive academic environment and ensuring students feel comfortable seeking guidance.

The fifth session featured the Fisipol Crisis Center discussing the issue of sexual violence. The session began with a quiz on the issue of sexual violence, followed by an explanation of the various forms of sexual violence and how to help victims with available resources. The open discussion that followed provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions and engage in meaningful dialogue about the issue.

The final session was again hosted by the Fisipol Crisis Center, focusing on mental health. The agenda began with a quiz on myths and facts about mental health issues. This session explained more deeply about how to maintain and deal with mental health, providing valuable insights and resources for students. By discussing mental health, this event emphasized the importance of holistic well-being in the academic journey. In addition, this discussion supported Sustainable Development Goal point 3 on Healthy and Prosperous Lives.

Through the implementation of Rumah HI, new students are expected to gain insights that can support academic and non-academic activities while studying at HI UGM. This event not only provides important information but also builds a sense of togetherness among students, encouraging them to be actively involved in their educational experience.

In conclusion, the Rumah HI event reflects the commitment of the Department of International Relations UGM to promote quality education and support the development of basic literacy skills among its students. By discussing important issues such as academic integrity, communication ethics, and mental health, the department is paving the way for a more informed and responsible generation of scholars.
