Yogyakarta, July 20, 2026 — The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, is hosting the annual Australia-Indonesia in Conversation (AIC) 2026 event today, Monday (July 20). Centered on the theme “Is AI the Game-Changer? Intelligence Unbound: Ethics, Power, and the Imagination of Life in the Digital Age,” the event series kicked off with a press conference held in the Dean’s Meeting Room at FISIPOL UGM.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Wawan Mas’udi, explained that the collaborative relationship between UGM and the University of Melbourne—two leading universities in the Global South—continues to expand in scope.
“AIC represents a milestone in the partnership between UGM and the University of Melbourne. It is a dialogue among experts convened annually, alternating locations—this year in Yogyakarta, and next year in Melbourne. The topics vary, ranging from governance during the COVID-19 era to this year’s focus on AI,” Wawan explained.
Through dialogue involving academics, policymakers, and cultural practitioners from both nations, AIC 2026 aims to foster a shared ethical commitment toward building a digital future that is resilient, creative, and equitable. AIC is an interdisciplinary dialogue platform first launched in 2021, reinforcing the enduring strategic partnership between FISIPOL UGM and the University of Melbourne, which has been firmly established since 2013.
