Community Service Program Debriefing: Socialization of Handling Sexual Violence Cases

Yogyakarta, May 20th 2022─Fisipol Crisis Center (FCC) of FISIPOL UGM provides a briefing for FISIPOL UGM students who are enrolled in the Community Service Program (KKN) of Period 2 in 2022, by holding socialization entitled “Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence” on Friday (20/5).  This event was filled by two speakers in their fields, they are Nurul Kurniati from Rifka Annisa Women’s Crisis Center and Arie Eka Junia from FISIPOL Crisis Center.

This KKN briefing aims to equip students on how to handle and report acts of sexual violence that may occur during the KKN period in June-August. In general, sexual violence is defined as degrading, insulting, assaulting, or other acts against a person’s body, sexual desire, or reproductive function by force. Sexual violence can happen to anyone, although women are still very vulnerable victims.

“The cause of sexual violence is usually due to unequal power relations between men and women, where social construction places women at a lower level than men,” Nurul said.

Types of sexual violence are divided into contact behaviour and non-contact behaviour. Contact behaviour such as touching personal areas, stroking, touching, kissing, and other things that come into contact with the physical. While non-contact behaviour such as showing pornographic material, showing human vital areas, peeking at people bathing, taking pictures for sexual purposes, and so on. The impact of sexual violence can be physical, psychological, and social.

Meanwhile, Arie Eka Junia explained that one of the efforts made against victims of sexual violence was reporting. FISIPOL Crisis Center as a unit for handling cases of sexual violence within the FISIPOL UGM environment receives case reports through three channels, namely direct reporting, referral, and reach out.

“References are usually reported from other institutions that refer cases of sexual violence to the FCC. Then, when we hear that there is a case and the people involved are FISIPOL UGM students and workers, we approach the victim whether they want help and so on. Meanwhile, direct reporting can contact the FCC’s communication channel,” Arie said.

Furthermore, the steps for handling victims after reporting consist of condition assessment, case documentation and verification, as well as assistance in handling and recovering victims simultaneously. After the documentation and case verification process is complete, the victim will be accompanied to settle the case legally or ethically.

“Legal settlement when this case is reported to the authorities or to the police, while ethical settlement can be done internally or within the faculty when both parties are FISIPOL UGM students,” Arie said.

For information, direct reporting can be done by contacting the following channels:
