Fisipol Crisis Center Discusses Gender Equality Issues in the Framework of IWD 2025

Yogyakarta, 11 March 2025–In commemorating International Women Day 2025, Fisipol Crisis Center (FCC) held a live Instagram event titled “Setara Bukan Sekadar Kata” (Equal is not just a word). The event, which was hosted by Nurul Amaliah (Master Student of DPP UGM), also presented speakers who enriched each other’s perspectives, namely Maygsi Aldian Suwandi, S.Sos., M.A (Lecturer of PSDK UGM) and Valenidha Sulafi (Peer Counselor CDC Fisipol UGM). This multi-perspective discussion aims to raise the issue of gender equality, challenges that are still faced, and concrete efforts that can be made to realize inclusive and sustainable equality.

Maygsi Aldian opened the discussion by highlighting the challenges of gender equality that stem from mindset and social structural conditions. According to her, societal norms and stereotypes often perpetuate inequality, making it difficult for women to reach their full potential, for example, in terms of the division of labour that is still gender-based, where many women are still struggling in the domestic aspect.

“Whereas the division of labour is not due to gender, but more on the person’s availability. Sometimes the challenge to challenge that (inequality) is in the mindset and structural challenges,” said Maygsi.

Valenidha Sulafi critically reflected on non-optimal access to education, especially for women and vulnerable economic groups. She emphasized that education is a powerful empowerment tool, and many individuals are left behind without equal access. “Education is not just a privilege; it is a basic right that must be accessible to everyone to create equal spaces,” Valenidha emphasized.

As the discussion progressed, the speakers covered a range of topics, including ensuring equal access to education and the role of men in fighting for gender equality. They emphasized that achieving equality requires collective efforts and commitment from all members of society. Fisipol Crisis Center’s initiatives align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the 4th goal, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable education and promote learning opportunities for everyone (Quality Education). As such, Fisipol Crisis Center continues to advocate for equality to create safe spaces free from sexual violence.
