FISIPOL UGM Realises Sustainable Community Empowerment Through Free Health Check Services

Yogyakarta, 24 November 2024–As a form of realization of sustainable community empowerment and a learning arena for students to get to know society, the Student Council (Dema) of Fisipol UGM once again ran the Fisipol Mengabdi work program on Sunday (24/11). The Fisipol Mengabdi program, this time focused on the health sector. By collaborating with Health Promoting University (HPU) Fisipol UGM, Fisipol Mengabdi opened free health checks for the community. This activity was held in Padukuhan Dayakan 1, Kemiri Village, Tanjungsari District, Gunung Kidul Regency, and was open to the general public.

Several health checks ranged from blood pressure, body mass, uric acid, and blood sugar to cholesterol. In addition, there was also a consultation session with a doctor so that people could share their complaints or get recommendations based on the results of the health checks that had been carried out. “In yesterday’s health check, through collaboration with HPU, we checked blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass, and cholesterol and provided consultation based on the data obtained and complaints from each resident,” said Diandra, one of the Fisipol Mengabdi committee members.

The community welcomed this activity with enthusiasm. The community felt happy and helped by this activity because there is rarely a free health check activity. Even if the community wants a health check, they are often hampered by access to health services such as community health centres. “The benefits are very much because health checks like this are rare in the village, even if you want to go to the health centre first, so if there is an activity like this, many people come, especially those who are elderly,” said Endang, one of the Dayakan residents.

Seeing the community’s enthusiasm, Diandra hopes that this activity can lead to better public health. In addition, she hopes that the collaboration between Dema, as a student element, Fisipol UGM, and the Dayakan community can always work together in various series of Fisipol Mengabdi in the future.

This good hope is also shared by the Dayakan community. Endang hopes this activity can continue and have a broader impact on the community’s welfare. “Hopefully, Fisipol Mengabdi can be even broader. Besides health checks, there are also activities in other fields,” he said.
