Get to know PR and Advertising Careers, Commufal 2024 Day 1 Presents Industry Practitioners

Yogyakarta, October 16th 2024─Communication Festival (Commufal) of 2024 is a means for students to get to know various things about the Department of Communication Science, including career prospects in the communication industry. The event, which was held at Selasar Barat and Taman Sansiro Fisipol, featured various interesting activities, including the Communicareer Talk Show and Open Booth Job Fair. One of the main highlights of this event was the talk show which focused on introducing career opportunities in the field of communication. 

On Day 1, the Communicareer Talk Show discussed career topics in the public relations and advertising industries. In the first session with public relations, Irnawati W. Kahardja, the Head of Protocol & Corporate Affairs SCM EMTEK, highlighted that the role of CSR in the world of PR is increasingly crucial. CSR is not only a company’s commitment to contribute to environmental sustainability and social welfare, but it greatly affects the company’s image in the eyes of the public.

“The essence of PR, especially in CSR, is not about profit, but usefulness. CSR must remain relevant to the business being run so that the programs must be related to the business field, also so that the company’s branding is maintained,” explained Irnawati in the question and answer session.

This important role of CSR has led to the formation of a career dynamic in the form of a separate division, which is not limited to public relations work. The aspects that need to be prepared to explore CSR careers are three fundamental public relations considerations including consumers, policies, and investors. 

Meanwhile, in the second session which raised the theme of advertising, Atiek Sudirman, Chief Investment Officer of IPG Mediabrands, was also invited. According to Atiek, advertising is currently increasingly segmented, thus encouraging various innovations to achieve efficiency when working. This creates both challenges and opportunities related to the use of AI in the advertising industry.

The discussion highlighted how the development of technology and digital media in influencing advertising has greatly impacted the dynamics of media and marketing strategy consulting service providers. Advertising agencies are now required to understand digital consumer behavior and utilize online platforms in creative ways. 

Atiek Sudirman also gave tips on how to deal with the high demands in advertising agencies, such as the ability to deal with pressure, come up with ideas to stay competitive, and maintain work integrity amid the challenges of instant desires. 

“Nowadays, many people want instant gratification, so to build a career, you have to be patient. We also need to read or see prestigious awards in the advertising world. It can give us inspiration and a sharper perspective to shape creativity,” Atiek said in her presentation.

Through Commufal 2024 day 1, students were able to gain insight into two fields that play a major role in the world of communication, namely public relations and advertising. The talk show is also expected to be a source of inspiration and valuable guidance in preparing themselves for the competitive world of work.
