Yogyakarta, 30th of October 2024—Currently, the issue of handling and preventing cases of sexual violence has become a part that is inseparable in the processes of higher education. In line with these agendas, UGM’s Faculty of Social and Political Science is fully committed in creating a campus environment that is both safe and free from sexual violence. As a way of fulfilling this commitment, Fisipol UGM, through the Fisipol Crisis Center (FCC), worked together with UGM’s PPKS Task Force in organizing the event “Satgas PPKS Goes to Faculty”. Bringing up the theme of “Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence on Health Promoting University (HPU),” this event was held on Wednesday (30/10) on Fisipol East Seminar Room.
“We very much appreciate the initiative from the university in regards to the management and prevention of sexual violence. Fisipol itself already has the programs mentioned since 2018. We hope that Fisipol and UGM can synergize its effort to give the most optimal service,” Poppy Sulistyaning Winanti explained in her welcoming speech. She is currently serving as Fisipol UGM’s Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.Yayi Suryo Prabandari, as the leader of UGM’s PPKS Task Force, was present in the event as the spokesperson. According to her, giving education and knowledge in regards to sexual violence is very important to do. Some civitas academia might not know that their experiences can be considered as sexual violence. “Sexual violence does not just include rape, but also all actions that demeans, harasses, and creates an uncomfortable feeling for the victims. The key word is the absence of consent and the uncomfortable impact it creates on the victim,” she spoke.
Yayi went on to explain the 21 different forms of sexual violence that can be categorized into four types: physical, nonphysical, verbal, as well as through online media, more commonly known as Online Gender Based Violence (KGBO).
The job of UGM’s PPKS Task Force includes prevention, report management, observation, as well as evaluation. In regards to the report system, the reporters can be individuals, lecturers, faculties, study programmes, as well as student organizations. The reporters can report a case through WhatsApp or the email of PPKS Task Force, which will be followed up as per the situation. “We provide services such as safe house services, autopsies, psychological support, as well as law consultation,” Yayi added.
Services of the PPKS Task Force and Fisipol UGM are expected to create a safe campus environment, therefore creating quality education. This is inline with UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 4 Quality Education and Sustainable Development Goals 5 Gender Equality.
