Yogyakarta, March 10th 2022─Professor Ana Nadhya Abrar, a professor from the Department of Communication Studies (Dikom), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) was inaugurated as Professor of Journalism at the Senate Hall of UGM.
In the inauguration event, which was held offline and online, Prof. Abrar delivered a speech entitled “Drawing the Boundaries of Journalism in Biographical Writing”. Prof. Abrar describes four limits that form the technical basis of journalism in writing biographies. First, the right limit of journalism is the prioritization of human values. Second, the left limit of journalism is shaping narrative tastes. Third, the upper limit of journalism is to increase the intellectuality of the audience. Finally, the lower limit, namely utilizing investigative journalism.
“When the four of them form a line, they actually form a space that journalism must fill in by writing biographies,” he said.
The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim has appointed Prof. Abrar has been a professor of journalism since November 1st, 2021. Before holding the title of professor, Prof. Abrar has shown an interest in journalism since 1982, the year he completed his undergraduate education and majored in Publicist at UGM. In 1994, Prof. Abrar holds a Master of Environmental Studies in Environmental Journalism from York University, Toronto, Canada. Sixteen years later, Prof. Abrar holds a Doctorate in Journalism from Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“Currently, Professor Ana Nadhya Abrar is one of 17 active professors at Fisipol UGM and 353 professors at UGM,” explained Prof. Mochammad Maksum, Chair of the UGM Board of Professors, at the inauguration ceremony.
Secretary of the Department of Communications and Political Sciences, UGM, Lidwina Mutia Sadasri, said that the inauguration of Prof. Abrar will strengthen the motor in Dikom in developing Bulaksumur-style journalism specialization. The presence of the Professor of Journalism is expected to be able to burn the spirit of the academic community to further strive for ideal and inclusive journalism.
“This professor’s inauguration also emphasizes the spirit of Dikom, which was originally called the department of publicity, which is thick with the orientation of journalism as a pillar in supporting democracy,” she added.
Congratulations on the inauguration of Prof. Abrar also came from various parties. One of the Dikom Journalism lecturers who had been a student under the guidance of Prof. Abrar while studying for a master’s degree at the Dikom Fisipol UGM, Zainuddin Muda Z. Monggilo, said that Prof. Abrar was a teacher, mentor, and motivator for him.
“Hopefully the inauguration of Bang Abrar as Professor of Journalism today will strengthen and expand journalism as a science whose khitah is to humanize humans, as he has always echoed until now,” said the man who is familiarly called Zam.
