Introducing the Dynamics of Media and Journalism, the 2nd Day of Commufal Holds Talk Show with Practitioner from TVRI and ARTJOG

Yogyakarta, 17th of October 2024—Communication Festival (Commufal) 2024 is an event that aims to introduce insights around the Department of Communication Sciences, including the dynamics of college, assignments, and career prospects. Commufal 2024 was held for two days on the 16th-17th of October 2024. On the second day, there was a career talk show, which invited media and journalistic practitioners from both TVRI and ARTJOG.

Commufal 2024 was held at Fisipol’s Selasar Barat and Taman Sansiro by displaying various unique and fun activities, including Talkshow Communicare and Open Booth Job Fair. One of the main highlights from this event was the talk show, which focused on the introduction of career opportunities in the communications sector. The Talkshow Comunicareer, which was held on the second day of the event, carries the theme of the work dynamics of both the media and journalism.

On the first session of the talk show, Donny Rahmad, as the Functional Broadcasting Officer for TVRI, explained that the main role of journalism, as the fourth pillar of democracy, is always to provide the information demands of the people. This opens great opportunities for the sustainability of journalists’ careers over time. Remembering this, the information produced can not just be any kind of information. It has to be selectively processed through both integrity and objectivity in presenting news.

Donny also shared an inspirational story about how he started his career and his strategies in overcoming challenges faced, like the ever-more competitive job market. For that, the career of a journalist not only requires ethical expertise, but also technical expertise, like good writing skills.

“Provision of knowledge regarding the dynamics of journalism, which includes things such as linguistics, camera techniques, and editing, needs to be practiced a lot. Training like a journalist should also be done, like honing a mindset that always wants to know,” explained Donny as he closes the first session of the talk show.

After the journalism section, the talk show was then continued with the theme of career in the media sector. The second session invited practitioners from ARTJOG, that is Diwa Hutomo, as the Marketing Director of ARTJOG. According to Diwa, the programming of media is always developing and it is currently experiencing many changes, specifically the technology sector, as proven by the use of digital media. The use of digital media, such as website, application, and social media, plays a big role in increasing the accessibility of ARTJOG as it allows more people to know about the works of artists in ARTJOG through virtual catalog, event schedule dates, as well as additional contents, like interviews with artists and curators.

“Entertainment media, from the technological side, is also experiencing many changes. So, it is important to adapt with said technologies, as we can be more versatile,” added Diwa.

Other than the talk show, the agenda of Commufal 2024 was also greeted by an art exhibition from Communication Sciences students themselves. According to Thalia Dwita Cahyani, as President of  KOMAKO UGM 2024, the art exhibition aims to be a place to show appreciation for the various kinds of assignment types in the Department of Communication Sciences. It can be in audio, visual, and also textual format. With that, Commufal 2024 became one of Fisipol’s ways to prepare a competitive labor market in the media and journalism industry.
