Yogyakarta, August 24th 2022 – The Forbiling Institute with the Institute of Governance and Public Affairs (IGPA) or Fisipol UGM Masters Program launched a documentary titled “Pandai Me 2: Learning Loss” which premiered on August 19th, 2022. The movie talks about the impact of remote learning done throughout the pandemic.
By digging deeper into the anxiety of learning during the pandemic, this movie was able to show the portrait of learning loss or the hurdles of learning that causes several students to miss out on crucial learning experiences which causes them to lose academic progress. The plot in the movie focuses on the struggles of final year students in determining their choice in the future; whether they should continue with their studies or they should work. Dimas, a senior in high school, has a dream of studying architecture at UGM and he is willing to do anything to realize his dreams. He and his three friends – Anto, Dani, and Rio — promise to work hard together through the SBMPTN route. However, their hard work is met with challenges that cause a crack in their friendship.
The film which lasts for 58 minutes is not only a documentary but also a movie that is based on research from Forbil Institute and IGPA UGM titled “Survey: Student’s Learning Loss as the Impact of Online Learning During COVID19”. The research is based on data from 3.344 elementary school, middle school, and high school students; 1.062 teachers in public and private schools; as well as 1.056 parents/guardians from 5 districts in the Yogyakarta province. This research shows that remote learning in Indonesia creates a significant impact in education which is the existence of learning loss. This condition is specifically impacted by remote learning, the lack of studying resources, the lack of parents/guardians’ ability in accommodating students’ learning process, students’ difficulty in maintaining concentration, as well as teachers’ lack of preparation in conducting remote learning.
Pandai Me is one of Fisipol UGM’s movie series that talks about the pandemic. It starts with the release of the first series which is Pandai Me: A Story About Pandemic. The plot of Pandai Me 2: Learning Loss is very similar to daily life, so the movie seems simple and very easy to understand. The economic, cultural, social aspects, and even the daily sarcasm are successfully visualized through the story of Dimas and his friends. This movie brings meaning, message, as well as appreciation to the progress of education in Indonesia.
