Student Workshop: How to Create an Interactive Presentation

Yogyakarta, November 3rd 2021─Fisipol UGM’s Unit of Academic Innovation is back with a student workshop titled “Interactive Presentation” on Wednesday (3/10). The speaker was Muhammad Irfan Sedana, a Social Media and Publication Coordinator in CfDS. The event was held through Zoom on 16.00 WIB and was attended by a couple of students.

In the material sharing session, Irfan Sedana talked about the basics of presentation, starting from the creation, research, data elaboration, how to present the presentation, and how to interact with the audience. Presentation skills are important, not only for when we are in university but also later on when we have a job.

“Presentation skills are important to improve our confidence in front of the public which will allow us to elaborate our ideas, suggestions, and even widen our connection,” Irfan said. Our presentation needs to be interactive so that the audience can understand the information that we give them. Interactions can also inspire the audience to implement what they have learned in the lecture to solve problems that they encounter in their day-to-day life.

Moreover, a presentation can be divided into two categories; lecturing and pitch deck. The difference between the two categories are in the content, nature, and aim of presentation. A ‘lecturing’ presentation is more academic because it focuses on one main topic with the aim of analyzing that topic thoroughly and specifically to start a discussion in a class. Meanwhile, a pitch deck presentation is like a persuasive negotiation whose focus is to promote something to external actors so a joint campaign or project can be initiated.

When it comes to how to do a presentation, there are several things that need to be paid attention to like rechecking our writing so that there are no typos and it is linguistically correct. Additionally, data elaboration needs to be presented in an easy to understand, analyze, and concluded graphics. When choosing our presentation design template, we can choose from the ready-made templates in PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides or Slideshare.

“We can choose whatever design we want for the presentation as long as it doesn’t distract the audience from the content of the presentation. After all, a design  is only the supporting element of a presentation,” Irfan said. Furthermore, it is advised to use a Sans Serif font because it is more readable. The color of our writing should also contrast the color of the background.
