Megashift FISIPOL UGM has published a fresh article exploring how satirical comedy on social media has become a creative and powerful form of political participation in today’s digital era. Written by Ardi Muhammad Rifqi, the article dissects how humor, memes, and stand-up comedy content are reshaping political discourse in Indonesia.

The article highlights three main drivers behind the rise of satire: the accessibility of social media platforms, the growing popularity of stand-up comedy, and restrictions on free expression under regulations like the ITE Law. Within this context, satire emerges as a safe yet sharp tool for citizens to voice criticism and hold political actors accountable. read more

Bulaksumur Roundtable Forum 2025 Raises Issues of Democracy and Climate Change

Yogyakarta, 20 August 2025–Climate change is causing significant disruption to almost every sector worldwide. Every country is racing to formulate the best policies to ensure the sustainability of society now and in the future. This discourse was present at the Bulaksumur Roundtable Forum 2025, which was held under the theme of democracy and the environment. Featuring a number of speakers from among experts, government officials, and academics, the forum, themed “Promoting Environmental Democracy to Counter the Climate Crisis,” was held on Wednesday (20/8).Ravio Patra, Indonesia Country Director of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), said Indonesia had the best natural resource management policies among ASEAN countries in 2015. However, there needs to be another paradigm that can review these policies, especially those that are community-oriented. “Because again, policies must be beneficial to the community. When we talk about the environment, we are not only discussing floods or forest fires, but also how prepared the community is and what the government has done,” said Patra.

Climate change is not a problem that centers on a single root cause. Collaboration and understanding are needed, as systems greatly influence their impact. Government policy is key to ensuring that this issue does not create deeper divisions between communities. Instead, good national policy in addressing climate change must be inclusive and equitable.

Patra added that, like it or not, many climate change challenges need to be prepared for. This is especially true as global support in the financial sector is beginning to shift towards this issue. However, climate action in Indonesia has grown organically within communities. This means that public awareness of climate change has already started to grow. The government must be able to formulate grassroots-based policies that can reach the smallest units of society. read more
