Yogyakarta, 26 August 2024–Universities and educational institutions have an essential and strategic role in safeguarding democracy in Indonesia. This cannot be separated from the function of universities to educate the nation’s children. The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fisipol UGM), which also plays a role in this matter, upholds the principles and values of democracy and is committed to pushing democracy towards a better direction. As a manifestation of this commitment, Fisipol UGM facilitated the Bocor Alus Politik Goes to Campus activity with the title “Balking the Constitution for Democracy”, which was held on Monday (26/8) at the Mandiri Auditorium of the Fisipol UGM.
“I think it’s a good step from Tempo friends to discuss democracy directly at the science centre, Fisipol UGM,” said Wahyudi Kumorotomo, Professor of Fisipol UGM and Secretary of the Council of Professors (Dewan Guru Besar/ DGB), when giving his speech. Wahyudi appreciated the enthusiasm of the students who attended and watched it live or online via the Tempo YouTube channel. According to him, this activity is part of the democratization process, a practical political education aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 concerning Quality Education.
The activities organized by Tempo and the Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa Keluarga Mahasiswa UGM presented resource persons, namely Ganjar Pranowo, a politician from the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDIP); Zainal Arifin Mochtar, Lecturer at Faculty of Law UGM; and Busyro Muqoddas, former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (Komisii Pemberantasan Korupsi/ KPK). Specifically, this discussion raised the topic of “Joko Widodo’s Government and a Decade of Turning Democracy”.
