CLIMATALK #1 – Global Environmental Politics
IIS’ CLIMATALK is a bi-monthly academic forum that examines issues surrounding climate change in Indonesia and around the world, as well as the intersection of climate change studies with politics. The interdisciplinary nature of this talk allows anyone participating to get insights from invited speakers from various backgrounds. Aside from academic discussion, we expect that CLIMATALK can help increasing public awareness on climate change and incite more concrete activities to address the problems.
This first round of CLIMATALK will have Prof. Lorraine Elliott and Dr. Abidah Setyowatifrom the Australian National University to talk about “Global Environmental Politics”. It is widely recognized that climate change not only produces environment degradation, but also prevents society (especially the poor and marginalized groups) in fulfilling basic needs and rights such as access to food, shelters, and productive resources. As such, climate change has been a key issue in multi-level policy debates and negotiations. This talk will discuss how global environmental issues have been addressed in the contemporary world politics. Muhammad Rum from the Department of International Relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada will also join the discussion.
