In November 2014, during Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Beijing, President Joko Widodo made it very clear that Indonesia’s grand-agenda is to rejuvenate the long gone Indonesian maritime culture. The central idea of the Maritime Doctrine is to foster the country’s maritime identity. Reasserting the long-standing “archipelagic outlook”, does the desired maritime culture would restore Indonesia’s maritime dominance both in South East Asia and internationally? The center stage of turning idealism into reality needs objective perspectives from many aspects and deeper examination.
