New Media and Politics in Indonesia: Oligarchs, Citizens and the Digital Revolution Ross Tapsell, The Australian National University
Digital media is becoming a key ‘battlefield’ between large, powerful oligarchs and ordinary citizens looking to bring about rapid and meaningful change. As internet penetration rises, the future of Indonesia’s democracy and pluralistic society will increasingly depend on how certain groups and actors manage and adapt to the emergence of new, digital technologies. My research examines how the political agencies of both oligarchs and ‘netizens’ are enhanced by digitalisation, and how an increasingly divergent society is being formed. In doing so, my research on Indonesia enters this debate about the transformations of society and power in the digital age.
