Yogyakarta, November 1st 2023─Center for Digital Society (CfDS) of UGM together with the Indonesian Artificial Intelligence Research & Innovation Collaboration (KORIKA) held a webinar series Digital Experts Talk #19 entitled “AI 101: Potential and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Various Sectors” on Wednesday (01/11) via Live Streaming – CfDS UGM YouTube Channel. This webinar is one of CfDS’s responses to the development of Artificial Intelligence in various fields and presents speakers from the academic, government and practitioner sectors. The webinar was attended by Hario Bismo Kuntarto (Chair of the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Digital Economy and Games Governance Team), Brigitta Ratih E. Aryanti (Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy Google Cloud) and Afiahayati (Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science & Electronics Faculty of Mathematics and Science of UGM).

Entering the revolution driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI). technology has spawned many studies from various sectors. According to Afiahayati, Artificial Intelligence, taking the definition from Russell and Norvig, is a system that has the ability to think and behave like humans and imitate human rationality. Developments in hardware, algorithms, and data availability are increasing AI’s position in various fields today.

As a university that is also implementing the Tridharma of higher education, UGM has responded to the development of AI by providing a Master of Artificial Intelligence study program (DIKE FMIPA UGM) since 2020. Meanwhile, in the realm of research and service, UGM has laboratories, research results, and collaboration with partners in various sectors.

“We have implemented the quadruple helix in every Tridharma PT activity by involving other stakeholders, such as government, industry, academics, and communities. Current partners include NVIDIA, EPSINDO, TOYOTA, BPJS, Telkom University and others,” Afia explained.

Meanwhile, as a representative of Google Cloud, Brigitta explained that Google has been an AI-based company since 2017. AI has been utilized in various Google products such as Google Workspace. Not only as a tool that facilitates human activities, AI capabilities are also utilized to address social and development issues.

“Google has made collaborations with the government sector to make data-based policies from urban issues, disaster response, and increasing community productivity to health.” Brigitta explained. Among these collaborations are the Green Light Project with DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Public Alerts with BMKG, and vaccine development with Biofarma.

Hario said that the government has conducted studies and is currently drafting ethical guidelines related to the use of AI as a reference for industry or business actors in KBLI 62015. In his presentation, the ethical guidelines describe six important values, namely inclusiveness, humanity, security, democracy, transparency, and credibility and accountability. The government has also launched Artificial Intelligence in Stranas (National Strategy) as a form of government commitment that actively looks at the ecosystem of technological development and sets the right policies for society. Cooperation between various sectors and fostering a quadruple helix ecosystem in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence needs to continue to encourage the responsible use of AI.
