Fisipol Leadership Forum #2: Analyzing the Thoughts of Muhaimin Iskandar in the Book Visioning Indonesia

Yogyakarta, September 28th 2022–Fisipol Leadership Forum is back with a new speaker, Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia’s Chamber of Representatives. The event that was held on Wednesday (28/9) was titled “Road to 2024: Analyzing the Thoughts of Muhaimin Iskandar”. The 200 attendees, among them students and the public, attended the event in Fisipol UGM’s Auditorium on the fourth floor which was live-streamed through Fisipol UGM Youtube channel.

“The effect of disruptions and the uncertainty of global change should not further corner those who are already marginalized. So, the challenge of inclusivity and social justice are something that we need to talk about together, noting that our society is very diverse,” said Prof. dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med., Ed., Sp.OG(K), Ph.D., as the Rector of Gadjah Mada University. According to her, disruption will continue to rise as time goes by, which is why guidance toward a better era in the midst of this disruption is needed.

As Indonesia heads towards the 2024 election, political enthusiasm from society rises. This rise of enthusiasm is welcomed by A. Muhaimin Iskandar by giving a glimpse of the future of the country which is written in the book “Visioning Indonesia: Policy Direction and Welfare Roadmap”. Muhaimin Iskandar or better known as Cak Imin said “This nation has a great and strong foundation, called democracy. The democracy that we have built since 1998 is the work of a nation that has worked hard to be better,”.

Democracy today is not only about elections but also about how each individual can contribute actively to build a system. Indonesia is one of the states that still hold a strong and productive democracy in Southeast Asia, which is why there needs to be an effort to maintain the strength of Indonesia’s democracy. “The democracy that we run through elections has gone through many distortions. Problems of the economy, citizen’s poverty, and misperception about our democracy support money politics in every implementation system of our democracy,” said Cak Imin.

The event that invites public figures continues to be held by Fisipol UGM in a way to disseminate ideas and discuss them with the public. “In this opportunity, we are very happy because Mr. Muhaimin Iskandar not only speaks, but his ideas are also memorialized through a book. We will create several other forums to discuss ideas together. We are sure that a healthy democracy can only be created when ideas are disseminated to the public,” said Wawan Mas’udi.

Not only are there material dissemination and a book discussion, this event was also completed with a talk show with several speakers. The last part of the event was a performance from a Bantul-based band called Ndarboy Genk which was welcomed enthusiastically by the attendees.
