From the Classroom to the Public Sphere: IUP FISIPOL UGM Students Prove Themselves as Agents of Change Through Social Campaigns

Yogyakarta, 25th of May 2026—-As part of the culminating assessment for the Social Campaign course, students from the Communication Studies program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL), UGM, organized a social campaign.

The event, which took place on Monday (May 25), was held in the Sansiro area at FISIPOL UGM. This activity served as an opportunity for students to translate course material into social interventions in public spaces.

The one-day event aimed to encourage students not only to be sensitive to various social issues but also to actively seek solutions using relevant communication strategies.

The primary objective of this one-day activity was to foster students’ sensitivity to various social issues while encouraging them to help design solutions. These solutions were developed using communication strategies tailored to the characteristics of the issues and the target audience.

Ahmad Asyqar Prabaswara, one of the students, said that what they presented at this event could spark change among other students. “The issues we raised are highly relevant to student life. In my opinion, what we’re seeking is change—even if it’s not massive, it still impacts our peers’ thinking,” he said.

They not only crafted messages but also delivered them directly to the audience using engaging and easy-to-understand methods. These in-person activities were carried out through creative means such as visual installations, interactive games, educational booths, and various participatory activities that encouraged active visitor engagement.

This event also serves as a reminder of the importance of basic education and literacy in addressing social issues. By engaging in discussions and activities that promote equitable access to education, students highlight the need for inclusive educational opportunities for all, regardless of their background.

What sets this initiative apart is the students’ courage in addressing social realities from their own generational perspective. The hope is that this event will broaden the academic community’s perspective on the complexity of social issues in the surrounding environment. By championing the values of participation, innovation, and social responsibility, the launch of this campaign demonstrates that students are not merely objects of learning, but agents of change who bring the principle of sustainability to life in their daily lives.
