UGM’s Institute of International Studies (IIS) Demonstrates Nuclear Weapons Ban Campaign at International Conference

Jakarta, April 17, 2026─Since 2025, the Institute of International Studies (IIS) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has officially become a member of the International Steering Group for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which is committed to advocating for humanitarian disarmament and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction, autonomous weapon systems, and other non-humanitarian weapons.

In line with this commitment, UGM’s IIS had the opportunity to attend the “Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and Security Concerns related to Nuclear Weapons” on Friday (April 17) in Jakarta. The conference was organized in collaboration with Indonesia, Austria, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Three lecturers from the Department of International Relations, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and researchers from the Institute of International Studies (IIS UGM), contributed to the conference: Dr. Ririn Tri Nurhayati (Head of the Department of International Relations), Drs. Muhadi Sugiono, M.A. (Senior Researcher and Lead Campaigner for Disarmament Advocacy), and Dr. Luqman-nul Hakim (Director of the Institute of International Studies).

The conference’s core message was to affirm that the TPNW is not merely a legal instrument but also a moral foundation that must be adhered to to prevent the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons in the current era of geopolitical turmoil. IIS FISIPOL UGM has been actively involved in the campaign for a nuclear weapons ban since 2013, and its commitment to this area remains.
