Yogyakarta, January 27th 2022─The Department of Social Development and Welfare (PSdK) Fisipol UGM held Social Development Talks with the topic “‘Beautiful Student’ Accounts: Glorification or Exploitation?” on Thursday (27/1). The event took place through a Zoom Meeting, by presenting Maulidya Indah Mega Saputri (an undergraduate student of the Department of PSdK) as the main speaker.

The discussion about the exploitation of women occurs in the academic community in a unique and hidden form. In fact, the campus should be the safest and most comfortable place to carry out learning activities. =&0=&Center for Digital Society (CfDS) Fisipol UGM held OPOSiT #25 or Chats and Opinion About the Digital World on Wednesday night (26/1). On this occasion, the topic was  “How do the Indonesian Society Respond to New Technologies?”. The event was held through @cfds_ugm Instagram Live and was hosted by Perdana Karim (CfDS Research Assistant) and Ardi Aziz (International Relations student 2018). The event talked about new rising-star technologies which are NFT and Metaverse. Those new technologies can be seen as a form of data decentralization, where users can take over the internet which is now free from the company’s monopoly. Ardi Aziz said that this new trend is very positive and needs to be welcomed because data decentralization can lead to empowerment. “Metaverse and NFT give a chance for talented individuals to create something of value, which they used to not be able to do in the real world,” he said. 

This phenomenon can be seen in the recent Ghozali case. Ghozali got millions of rupiah because he successfully sold an NFT of his selfie for five years. This creates plenty of responses from society, with some of them interested in delving into the NFT world even though they don’t understand the whole thing yet. 

However, the NFT culture also creates a wrong mindset in the society where they see technology merely as a way to reap money instead of a place to create innovative work.

“I agree that NFT is a moneymaker for their creativity, but at the same time the Opensea market is now filled with people who are trying to copy Ghozali’s work by using corruptor’s photos, and even worse, some use their selfie with their identity card,” Perdana said. read more

Yogyakarta, January 13th 2022─Christmas and New Year’s Day may have passed, but the spirit to keep their love will never be extinguished. This was the background behind the implementation of the Christmas Celebration of FISIPOL UGM on Thursday (13/1). Different from previous years, the Christmas celebration entitled “The Love of Christ That Moves Brotherhood” was held in a hybrid way—a combination of offline for the organizers and some performers, and online for the event participants.

According to the title, the Christmas Celebration of FISIPOL UGM is not only a religious celebration. Moreover, there are also social values that include kinship and diversity within the faculty, as stated by Wawan Mas’udi as the Dean of FISIPOL UGM in his speech. These values are clearly reflected in the people involved in the implementation of this year’s Christmas Celebration of FISIPOL UGM; both the committee and the participants also involved non-Christian academics. read more

Yogyakarta, January 12th 2022─Indonesia Businessman Association (APINDO) and Gadjah Mada University Faculty of Social and Political Science (Fisipol UGM) established a cooperation in terms of providing internships for UGM university students in APINDO companies on Wednesday (12/1/2022). The interns will be placed in APINDO member companies and Apindo Partner Companies for three to six months. 

The cooperation is a form of support from the industry and academic world for the government that aims to fulfill the state’s strategic goals which is creating excellent human resources. This cooperation is also an implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program that was initiated by the Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. read more

Yogyakarta, January 11th 2022─Universitas Gadjah Mada through its official channel (@ugm.yogyakarta) held a Study Program Talk, in which in this episode 11 discussed about six study programs in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. The study program discussion series was conducted through a question and answer session guided by moderator Aura Maulidatul K. and answered by six speakers who were representatives of each study program. Starting from Mada Sukmajati (Head of Undergraduate Program of the Department of Politics and Government), Gabriel Lele (Head of Undergraduate Program of the Department of Public Policy Management), Fuji Riang Prastowo (Secretary of the Department of Sociology), Treviliana Eka Putri (Secretary of Department of International Relations), Bahruddin (Secretary of the Department of Social Development and Welfare), and Nyarwi Ahmad (Head of Department of Communication Studies). “The Department of Politics and Government has a vision of realizing educational institutions as the development of social science and political science that sided with democratic and human values. The curriculum that we offer has studies on politics, government, and general social sciences,” explained Mada Sukmajati, Head of the Undergraduate Study Program at the Department of Politics and Government at the start of the Q&A session of the Study Program Discussion. read more

A couple of UGM Faculty of Social and Political Science students won a variety of competitions. Starting from Agam Syah Fadhila who won the Grand Champion in the Indonesia Flying Robot Contest (KRTI) 2021 with the UGM Gamaforce team. Even though he is a social studies student, Agam’s achievement shows that there are no limits when it comes to learning new things. Therefore, with the knowledge that he already has, Agam can still contribute to the team and eventually win a prize.“Even though I’m from social studies, there is some useful knowledge that I gained from my studies such as how to create a plan and how to have a good interpersonal communication,” Agam said, a communication studies batch 2019 student.

A similar achievement from the same department was made by Satria Setya Wibawa. Equipped with communication studies knowledge, he won three championships in the film category. He won first place in the Spectrum Fisip UNS 2021 Short Movie Championship, first place in FETEPERS FKIP ULM 2021 short education movie championship as well as third place and voters-favorite winner in the Agriploxion 2021 short video championship. Satria also created a film community with members from many different universities. This community is aimed to be a place of discussion, collaboration, and a group to enter and win championships. read more

=&0=&The Organization of Humanity (OH) Fisipol UGM held an online visitation in the form of public discussion regarding the issue of sexual violence in universities. On this occasion, the speakers were Arie Eka Junia from Fisipol Crisis Center, Annisa Ayuningtyas as the Knowledge Manager in UGM Law Faculty’s Research Center for Law, Gender and Society.To start off the discussion, the speakers said that sexual harassment is a shared problem that needs special attention and commitment to solve. 

“Sexual violence cases are revealed more often these days. These cases create a sense of worry and it happens, ironically, in the academic environment” Annisa said, in an event moderated by Gilang Irfan Anshori, a student of the Faculty of Social Development and Welfare UGM.

These kinds of discussions can facilitate the rise of awareness regarding sexual violence, especially in universities. 

According to the speakers, the sexual violence cases in universities arose because of many factors such as a power relations imbalance, the lack of legal protection in universities, and the need to protect the reputation of a university which makes the victim’s demand for justice more difficult.  read more

Yogyakarta, January 6th 2022─Universitas Gadjah Mada together with the Merdeka Indonesia Jaya Campus held a Socialization of the Batch 2 of Independent Study Program for Internship and Certified Independent Studies (MSIB) at Kampus Merdeka of 2022 on Thursday (6/1). The event, which took place through Zoom Meeting, invited several MSIB Batch 1 students to share their experiences.

The Independent Campus Program by the Ministry of Education and Culture is an opportunity for students to take part in cross-study and cross-campus learning. Apart from being able to convert up to 20 credits into credits, this program also provides a certain amount of money at the end of the implementation. Yogyakarta, December 30th 2021─Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) held a discussion with the theme “Consolidating Democracy and Strengthening the Ideology of Pancasila”. The event, which was held in a hybrid way (online and offline), at the Ballroom of Novotel Suites Yogyakarta Malioboro and the Zoom Meeting virtual room, presented speakers consisting of academics and political practitioners from the MPR and DPR RI. The event was opened by MC Debora Putri and then the discussion was guided by a lecturer from the Department of Politics and Government (DPP) of Fisipol UGM, Joash Tapiheru. The Dean of Fisipol UGM, Wawan Mas’udi, and the Deputy Chair of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly, Ahmad Basarah, gave a speech at this event.In his speech, Wawan explained that the discussion with the MPR RI aimed to examine the issue of democracy in Indonesia. According to Wawan, the substantive aspect, namely the ideology of Pancasila, is important to consider when discussing democracy. read more
