Yogyakarta, August 18, 2026—Marking the start of the Fall Semester 2026/2027, the Department of Politics and Government (DPP) at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a semester-opening public lecture featuring four early-career lecturers who shared the stories behind their respective dissertation research. The event highlighted the research processes undertaken, the findings produced, and the contributions offered to the advancement of knowledge and public policy.

Kicking off the presentations, Dr. A. Sudiana Sasmita outlined his dissertation, which examines the relationship between ethnicity and democracy in West Papua through a comparative case study of South Sorong and Keerom Regencies. His fieldwork findings demonstrate that the relationship between ethnicity and democracy is not necessarily negative—contrary to common assumptions in mainstream political literature. Instead, his research reveals that ethnic politics in West Papua can coexist with democratic participation. “Although transmigrant groups are numerically dominant, they collectively support Indigenous Papuan (OAP) candidates to ensure stability, security, asset protection, and bureaucratic continuity. In return, strategic positions within the bureaucratic hierarchy are made available to non-Papuan migrant groups,” he stated. read more

Yogyakarta, August 11, 2026—The Universitas Gadjah Mada Workers’ Union (SEJAGAD) held a forum at the auditorium to analyze the vision and mission statements of four candidates for Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) UGM, focusing on issues regarding the welfare and workloads of lecturers and educational support staff.

A 2025 survey by SEJAGAD revealed that a significant portion of income for lecturers and support staff still comes from irregular sources. Furthermore, the majority of these staff members work more than eight hours a day, and over half of the lecturers report experiencing physical and psychological strain. read more

Yogyakarta, June 27, 2026─In order to meet the need for childcare support for the academic community, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) established and manages the Family Wellness facility, an integrated daycare service located within the campus environment, precisely on the 1st Floor of the BH Building, FISIPOL UGM.

Yogyakarta, 26th of May 2026—The Department of Politics and Government Studies at Universitas Gadjah Mada (DPP UGM) held an awareness-raising event on addressing sexual violence and mental health.

The event was organized in response to growing public concern over cases of violence in academic settings, including student demonstrations at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta demanding the dismissal of 11 faculty members suspected of sexual violence.

The Head of the Department of Politics and Government at UGM, AAGN Ari Dwipayana, emphasized that the department has the authority to take firm action in addressing issues of violence, but also provides ample space for recovery from the impact of such violence. “There is no tolerance for violence, but there is always room for recovery,” he said. read more

Yogyakarta, April 17, 2026─Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and Kopernik, held a five-day Gender Durability Research Workshop from April 13–17, 2026. This workshop served as a crucial part of preparing the 2026 field research agenda, as well as a space for academic consolidation and strengthening cross-institutional collaboration.

The workshop was designed to bring together researchers, lecturers/academics, and practitioners from various backgrounds to develop a research framework that is comprehensive, contextual, and responsive to local social dynamics. The primary focus of the study was on women’s everyday politics, which is seen as a crucial space for understanding power relations, social practices, and the challenges women face in their daily lives in various regions of Indonesia. read more

The Institute of International Studies (IIS), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with UN Women Indonesia, has officially launched the Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) Report. This report highlights gender inequality and the intersecting vulnerabilities faced by women in fragile contexts.

The study examines the root causes of gender inequality across settings shaped by disasters, social conflict, and violent extremism. Conducted in Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), Bima (West Nusa Tenggara), and Sigi (Central Sulawesi), the research adopts a participatory approach that positions women as active subjects rather than passive objects of study. read more
