Yogyakarta, April 28, 2026—The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FISIPOL UGM), concluded its nearly month-long Visiting Scholar series with Dr. Priyambudi Sulistiyanto on Monday (April 21).
Dr. Priyambudi Sulistiyanto is known for his expertise in Indonesian political studies and comparative politics in the Southeast Asian region, with over three decades of field research experience. His presence at FISIPOL UGM is expected to strengthen critical research methodologies, inspire young researchers to get directly involved in the field, and open up a richer discourse space through reflections on the intellectual heritage of regional thinkers.

During nearly a month in Yogyakarta (March 30–April 21), Dr. Priyambudi Sulitiyanto has presented at various academic events, from public lectures and workshops to conferences and closed-door discussions. One of his goals as a visiting scholar is to encourage FISIPOL students to conduct field research, especially in Southeast Asia.
“My goal in holding this workshop is to encourage my colleagues, while they’re still young, while they have budget airlines, while they have the opportunity and live in Southeast Asia, to participate in schemes or seek funding to visit these sites, if possible,” he said.
In the closing session of the visiting scholar program, Dr. Priyambudi Sulistiyanto delivered a seminar to explore the thoughts of the late Benedict Richard O’Gorman Anderson, a leading political scientist, during his time in Bangkok. Through his presentation, Dr. Sulistiyanto invited participants to retrace this intellectual legacy to enrich their perspectives on political studies in the Southeast Asian region.

As a political anthropologist with over three decades of field research experience in Southeast Asia, Dr. Priyambudi Sulistiyanto’s presence at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) UGM is expected to have a significant impact on strengthening critical research methodologies and increasing the courage of young researchers to engage directly in the field.
