FISIPOL UGM Lecturer Reveals Disaster‑Resilient Tourism Governance Model Based on Local Wisdom and Green Economy

A lecturer from the Department of Management and Public Policy (DMKP), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FISIPOL UGM), Bevaola Kusumasari, together with Sakir Ridho Wijaya and Agus Pramusinto, has again achieved a notable academic milestone through the publication of an international journal article titled “How do Policy Network, Local Wisdom, and Green Economy Interact to Shape Sustainable Tourism Governance in Disaster‑Prone Areas?”. The article has been published in the reputable International Journal of Tourism Anthropology, enriching studies on sustainable tourism governance.

The research focuses on West Nusa Tenggara, a region rich in cultural and ecological potential but highly vulnerable to disasters. Using a qualitative approach that includes semi‑structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis, the study explores how formal policy networks, local wisdom, and green economic practices interact to shape governance models that are both sustainable and resilient.

Findings show that formal policy networks tend to be hierarchical and elitist, limiting local actors’ participation in decisionmaking. In contrast, community‑based tourism practices offer more inclusive approaches by strengthening local values, ethics, and autonomous management mechanisms, which enable fairer distribution of benefits among community members.

Grassroots innovations and the integration of green economy principles are identified as key factors in building tourism systems that are not only sustainable but also resilient to disaster risks. The study further emphasizes that synergy among adaptive policy networks, local wisdom, and sustainable economic practices is essential for effective governance—especially in contexts within the Global South.

This contribution aligns with efforts to achieve several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), showcasing FISIPOL UGM scholars’ commitment to addressing sustainable development through impactful research.
