FISIPOL UGM Student Union Releases “Refusing to be Silenced” Statement Amidst Democratic Emergency

Yogyakarta, June 15, 2026—In response to a national socio-political situation deemed increasingly critical, the FISIPOL UGM Student Union (KM FISIPOL) held a press release reading, a declaration of stance, and a free speech forum at Taman Pintar FISIPOL on Monday (June 15). The rally was marked by the presence of a crowd dressed uniformly in black as a symbol of deep concern.

In its declaration, KM FISIPOL highlighted various crucial issues, pointing to the state’s failure to listen to its people. The primary concerns raised included the weakening of the Rupiah, soaring prices of basic commodities and fuel (BBM), misdirected budget allocations, and the alarming erosion of civilian supremacy following the enactment of the TNI (Military) and Polri (Police) Laws.

The event was attended not only by students but was also open to the broader public. Dr. Suci Lestari Yuana, a lecturer at the Department of International Relations and a representative of the Universitas Gadjah Mada Workers Union (SEJAGAD), took to the free speech forum to express her concerns regarding Indonesia’s current state.

“When we speak out about current government programs, it is a way of protecting ourselves. The prices of fuel, basic necessities, and other aspects of life are rising. If we allow these economic conditions to persist without any corrective action from the government, it is highly likely that by next semester or next year, some of us will no longer be here. They will have lost their economic access, unable to pay their tuition fees (UKT) or overcome other financial hurdles,” expressed Nana.

In addition to the speeches, the event also featured a theatrical performance titled “Pentas Realita,” presented by students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) UGM. To conclude the series of protest activities, the FISIPOL Student Council read out several key demands, including:

  • KM FISIPOL UGM demands the government to revoke the TNI and Polri Laws and fully uphold civilian supremacy.
  • KM FISIPOL UGM demands the government to immediately lower the prices of basic commodities and fuel.
  • KM FISIPOL UGM demands the government to halt the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) and Red and White Village Cooperative (KDMP) programs.
  • KM FISIPOL UGM urges the government to immediately strengthen the Rupiah exchange rate.
  • KM FISIPOL UGM urges the government to improve communication between the state and its citizens to restore public trust.
  • KM FISIPOL UGM urges Universitas Gadjah Mada to immediately take an official stance in solidarity with the people’s suffering.

Furthermore, this event serves as a manifestation of the FISIPOL UGM academic community’s commitment to safeguarding a just democracy oriented toward the needs of the people.
