POLGOV Research Center Holds First Forum to Discuss Disparities in Nickel-Producing Regions

Yogyakarta, 24 June 2026─The POLGOV Research Center will host its inaugural multi-stakeholder forum, titled the POLGOV Policy Forum (PPF) 2026. This forum is designed to bring together academics, policymakers, industry representatives, and civil society in a roundtable discussion to address more equitable natural resource governance.

This event is being launched amid the “paradox of plenty” phenomenon occurring in several nickel-producing regions across Indonesia. Although economic growth in North Maluku surged by more than 20% and Central Sulawesi recorded growth above 12% from 2021 to 2024, poverty rates in both provinces have actually continued to rise. read more

Yogyakarta, June 11, 2026─The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) UGM hosted a national-level Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on June 11-12, 2026, with the agenda “Data and Information Gathering for the Preparation of the Policy Paper ‘South-South Transition Minerals Learning Cohort’.” This event was initiated by the National Economic Council of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with the Department of Politics and Government, FISIPOL UGM, represented by two department lecturers, Hasrul Hanif and Primi Suharmadhi Putri. read more

The FISIPOL UGM Creative Hub, in Collaboration with UNSW and the University of Leipzig, Engages Residents of Terban in Observing Sustainable Waste Management

Yogyakarta, 8 June 2026─The Creative Hub of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FISIPOL UGM), together with partners from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Leipzig, conducted an observation and mini-fieldwork study on waste management in RW 05, Terban Village, Gondokusuman, Yogyakarta City.

Indonesia faces challenges in waste management, with a national waste production volume of 23.9 million metric tons per year, 65.45% of which remains poorly managed due to low community participation. The Terban area, located not far from the UGM campus, faces similar issues and was therefore selected as a living laboratory for circular economic transformation through the development of the Gebrak Sampah Ecosystem. read more

Master of Public Policy and Management FISIPOL UGM Holds Publicness Forum to Respond to the Environmental and Living Space Crisis in Rawa Tripa

Held virtually on Thursday (04/06), this public dialogue space carried the theme “Towards Living Space Inclusivity: Rawa Tripa and the Remaining Hope.” This event serves as a critical response to the increasingly alarming ecological and agrarian crisis in Rawa Tripa, one of the most important and historic peat swamp ecosystems in Indonesia. read more

To Create a Green Campus, UGM’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Expands Its Green Open Spaces

Yogyakarta, 19th May, 2026—In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has transformed the parking lot located on the west side of the Bank Mandiri FISIPOL UGM branch into a vibrant green space. This initiative marks a crucial step in the faculty’s commitment to increasing green open spaces within the academic environment.

The transformation of the area is clearly visible, as what was once a crowded parking lot has become a clean expanse of lush green grass and newly planted trees. This change not only beautifies the campus but also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on environmental sustainability and climate action. read more

The Social Research Centre (SOREC) of FISIPOL UGM Holds a Film Screening and Discussion of “Pig Feast”

Yogyakarta, May 12, 2026─SOREC FISIPOL UGM initiated the “Papuan Solidarity Space for Land Sovereignty, Food, and Life,” which included a screening and discussion of the film “Pig Feast.” Held on Tuesday (May 12) in the 4th Floor Auditorium of FISIPOL UGM, the event was well-attended by members of the FISIPOL UGM academic community and the general public.

The event began with a screening of “Pig Feast,” directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono and the entire documentary team. The discussion continued with a discussion session moderated by Sana Ulaili (Forum Cik Di Tiro) and invited three moderators: Bagus Sulistiono (Center for Capacity Development and Cooperation (PPKK) FISIPOL UGM), Made Supriatma (CRRS, Knowledge Council YLBHI), and Herni Saraswati (Women Farmers). The discussion focused on the issues raised in the film, which were then addressed by the Papuan Student Alliance (AMP) and the Papuan Indigenous Peoples of the Meepago, Lapago, and Animha Regions. read more

Yogyakarta, April 26, 2026─The deployment of Fisipol Mengajar volunteers to Central Aceh Regency and the Bala Gadjah Mada Team to the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) from January to February 2026 brought urgency to the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) to hold an event titled “Exhibition and Dissemination of FISIPOL Documentation in Aceh and IKN” on Friday (April 24). This event served as a collaborative space that bridged students’ empirical experiences with academic reflection and policy discourse. Fisipol Mengajar focused on community support in disaster-affected areas in Aceh, with an emphasis on post-disaster educational recovery and strengthening social interaction. Meanwhile, Bala Gadjah Mada initiated an expedition to the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) area focusing on environmental management issues, particularly waste management in the development buffer zone. read more
